For example, at the intersection of 2/9 and Xo Viet Nghe Tinh streets, the red light lasts 90 seconds, while the green light only lasts about 25 seconds. This requires people to be more patient when traveling. During rush hours such as early morning and afternoon rush hour, some people have to wait for the red light 2-3 times to get through this area.
The extension of red light duration at major intersections is believed to reduce traffic congestion during rush hours. When the green light lasts only about 25 seconds, the number of vehicles that can pass the intersection in one cycle is very limited. This causes prolonged traffic congestion in high-volume directions, especially during rush hours.
Mr. Huy Minh (a resident of Cam Le district, Da Nang city) said that every day on his way to work, he passes through this intersection. Early in the morning around 7-8am, the red light here lasts 90 seconds while there are many vehicles, he often has to wait for another red light to be able to pass, because the green light only lasts 25 seconds.
“In winter like now, there is no problem, but in summer, I have to wait a long time at this intersection, it is very hot and uncomfortable. I hope the green light time here will be extended to reduce the waiting time of vehicles” - Mr. Minh shared.
Many opinions say that there needs to be more reasonable adjustments in the allocation of traffic light times, ensuring a balance between travel directions. Recently, Da Nang has also applied smart traffic management technologies, such as traffic flow sensors, to help traffic in Da Nang become more open and convenient.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Bui Hong Trung - Director of the Department of Transport of Da Nang City said that the traffic light cycle depends on the traffic volume and the number of light phases. Some intersections with large differences in the cycle between green and red lights are studied by the department in accordance with the traffic volume to suit the situation, avoiding traffic congestion.
At intersections, if there is a large difference causing inconvenience to traffic participants, the department will continue to research and make appropriate adjustments.
Regarding damaged traffic lights and faulty counters, the Director of the Department of Transport of Da Nang City added: "The Department has assigned the Traffic Signal and Public Transport Operation Center to develop a maintenance and repair plan to ensure safety and convenience for people participating in traffic, regularly checking traffic lights for timely handling."
