On July 30, the People's Council of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone (An Giang) for the 2026-2031 term held the third session - the regular mid-year meeting of 2026.
The session reported on the assessment of socio-economic development tasks, national defense and security in the first 6 months of 2026. In general, the economic picture of the special zone recorded very positive results, 17/19 targets were achieved and exceeded the set plan. Tourism grew impressively: Total number of tourists is estimated at more than 5.7 million (up more than 30% compared to the same period, reaching 58.2% of the year plan). Of which, international visitors reached more than 1.3 million (up more than 50% compared to the same period, reaching 66% of the plan). Total revenue from tourism services is estimated at more than 31,500 billion VND. Budget revenue decentralized under the special zone management reached 1,862 billion VND. Key projects, especially infrastructure serving the APEC 2027 Conference, were focused on drastic direction with a disbursement rate of 48.7%.
At the session, People's Council delegates also frankly reflected many inadequacies as well as issues arising from practice. Specifically, the progress of issuing land use right certificates for the first time is still slow; The difference between compensation prices and resettlement land prices is high, many people receiving compensation money do not have the ability to buy resettlement land. The delegate also proposed vocational conversion for people in the project area and accelerating the progress of issuing resettlement land to eligible households; Proposing to support rent for households living close to the APEC project that are directly affected.
Delegate Pham Huynh Quoc Thanh proposed: It is necessary to implement the policy of developing traditional craft villages and at the same time have policies to support businesses to access preferential capital sources after mergers so that businesses can better serve the upcoming APEC 2027. In addition, traffic jams at An Thoi center need traffic diversion forces during peak hours. The construction of underground power cables is also proposed to switch to the "rolling" method and arrange traffic controllers.
In the spirit of receptiveness and responsibility, Mr. Tran Minh Khoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of the special zone and agencies directly under the province, representatives of departments, agencies, and specialized sectors of Phu Quoc special zone directly explained and clarified issues under their authority right at the meeting.
In addition, the session also considered and approved important Resolutions, creating a legal premise and motivation to promote Phu Quoc to excellently complete its tasks in 2026, towards the APEC 2027 international event.
