Major milestone
The 14th National Congress of the Party is expected to be held from January 19 to January 25, 2026. The time of the Congress is very close. This is a congress marking a particularly important milestone on the path of development of the country, because this is the Congress that opens a new era - an era in which Vietnam is determined to realize the two goals of 100 years of Party establishment and 100 years of national establishment; striving to become a developed country with high income by 2045.
The theme of the Congress: "Under the glorious flag of the Party, joining hands and consensus to successfully implement the country's development goals to 2030; strategic self-reliance, self-strengthening, confidence, and strong progress in the era of national rise for peace, independence, democracy, prosperity, prosperity, civilization, happiness, steadily advancing towards socialism" clearly shows the position and role of the 14th Congress, carrying a turning point and historical significance for the country's development.
The 14th Congress is likened to the second renovation, showing the high political determination of the entire Party, army, and people in bringing the country into the era of national rise. The draft Political Report was prepared meticulously and carefully, with many innovative points: Short, concise, highly general, tight structure, fully and comprehensively reflecting the major issues of the country.
Notably, the merger of three important documents including the Political Report, the Socio-Economic Report and the Report summarizing Party building work and the implementation of the Party Charter into a single Political Report submitted to the 14th National Congress is a new, breakthrough step, showing innovative thinking, strategic vision and the spirit of daring to think, daring to do, and decisiveness in leadership and direction.
The top priority in this era is to successfully implement strategic goals: By 2030, Vietnam will become a developing country with modern industry and high middle-income income; by 2045, it will become a developed country with high income.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Thao - former Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics - assessed that after 10 years of Doi Moi (1986–1996), in the context that many countries in the world were still in crisis, Vietnam overcame difficulties, bringing the country firmly on the path of national independence and socialism. By 2008, Vietnam's average income per capita exceeded the threshold of 1,000 USD.
We have emerged from the situation of slow development, entering the group of developing countries with middle-income incomes. This is a historically significant achievement, opening a new page in the history of the Vietnamese nation," Mr. Nguyen Viet Thao emphasized.
40 years of Doi Moi has created a historical turning point, helping the country overcome the slow development situation, gradually perfecting the socialist-oriented market economy. From a backward agricultural country, Vietnam has become a large-scale economy in the region. In 2025, GDP reached more than 500 billion USD, being the fourth largest economy in ASEAN and 32nd in the world; trade turnover reached over 900 billion USD, ranking in the top 20 countries. Vietnam continues to be a bright spot in economic recovery and growth in a volatile global context.
Speaking at the 8th Vietnam Young Entrepreneurs Congress, Politburo Member, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that after nearly 40 years of Doi Moi, Vietnam's economy has achieved many important achievements. If growth is over 8% by the end of 2025, the economic scale will reach about 510 billion USD, ranking 32nd in the world; per capita income exceeds 5,000 USD. Accordingly, Vietnam enters the group of countries with high middle incomes - a common achievement of the Party and the State.
The Head of Government also emphasized that to achieve the goal of becoming a developed country with high income by 2045, Vietnam must rely on science and technology, innovation and digital transformation.

Solid foundation for the country to rise
The goal of human development, arousing aspirations, national autonomy, and self-reliance, towards two 100-year goals are not only economic indicators, but also political commitments and great aspirations of the nation in the new era.
Many opinions believe that the draft Documents of the 14th Congress this time are presented briefly and clearly; the development goals and targets in the next 5 years are concretized with easy-to-understand and easy-to-implement figures. In particular, the guiding viewpoint emphasizes taking science and technology, innovation and digital transformation as the main driving force for development.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, National Assembly delegate Ta Van Ha - Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for Culture and Society - said that digital transformation plays a foundational role for all development activities. When the Party has clear directions and put them into documents, the chances of success will be higher. In the next 10-15 years, the achievements of this process can be clearly seen.
He also emphasized the requirement to continue breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation, and digital transformation according to Resolution 57 of the Politburo; private economic development according to Resolution 68; promoting international integration according to Resolution 59; perfecting institutions, building and implementing laws according to Resolution 66.
The National Assembly and the Government have issued many resolutions and action programs to implement the resolutions of the Politburo. Therefore, ministries, branches, and localities need to continue to concretize and effectively organize implementation; subjects in the field of science and technology and innovation need to unite and join forces to synchronously implement the set tasks.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Cuong - Deputy Director of the Institute of Party Building - commented: "The targets are defined very clearly, concisely, not expressed lengthily. All 100-year milestones have measurable indicators. Just reading the Political Report can be considered an action program to easily grasp and easily organize implementation.
Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Phuc - former Editor-in-Chief of the Communist Review - emphasized: "If we do not develop quickly and sustainably, we will lag behind; if we lag behind, we cannot keep up, even cannot surpass some aspects compared to other countries.
Appreciating the orientation of private economic development to become an important driving force, many opinions believe that this is a breakthrough new point. However, the key issue is to take drastic action, soon complete the institution, and create a favorable legal corridor for this economic sector to develop strongly.
It can be affirmed that the 14th Congress is a particularly important political event, demonstrating the intelligence, bravery and great responsibility of the Party towards the Vietnamese revolution in the new era; it has the meaning of orienting the path of national development, shortening the process of socialization. The 14th Congress will continue to arouse the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country, bringing Vietnam steadily forward, standing shoulder to shoulder with the five continents in the new era.
