On July 29, Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee said that the whole province is implementing a peak period to remove the IUU "yellow card" warning.
The implementation of the peak period of implementing urgent tasks and solutions to remove the "yellow card" warning of the European Commission (EC) for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is of particular importance, not only in the short term but also strategic for the development of the fisheries sector.
The removal of the "yellow card" warning is not simply to meet the EC's requirements but also an opportunity for localities to improve the efficiency of state management in the field of fisheries, build a modern, transparent and sustainable fishing industry.
This is also the responsibility of the entire political system, functional sectors, local authorities and the fishing community in protecting aquatic resources, preserving the image and prestige of Vietnamese seafood in the international market.
Ms. Ho Thi Nguyen Thao, Standing Vice Chairwoman of Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee, said that the locality is also proposing to the Central Government to pay attention to supporting investment in upgrading infrastructure of fishing ports, storm shelters and completing technology systems to serve fisheries management.
In parallel with that, the province is also implementing the Project "Changing professions in seafood exploitation in Dak Lak province", with a total estimated cost of more than 727.5 billion VND, to rearrange the exploitation profession structure and towards sustainable seafood development.
The project aims to definitively convert 1,273 coastal fishing vessels and 92 offshore fishing vessels engaged in trawling and drift net fishing to environmentally friendly occupations or switch to other production fields. This not only aims to protect aquatic resources but also helps about 3,000 workers escape from precarious income and stabilize long-term livelihoods.
According to statistics from Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee, the locality manages 2,596 fishing vessels from 6 m or more on the VNFishbase system, 100% of data has been cross-checked and identified synchronously with the National Population Database (VNeID). All 691/691 fishing vessels from 15 m or more have been installed and operated VMS (reaching 100%). The rate of fishing vessels still within inspection limit reaches 99.61% and the rate of fishing licenses still within their limit reaches 99.65%.
From the beginning of the year to now, 4 fishing ports in the province (Dong Tac, Phu Lac, Tien Chau, Dan Phuoc) have controlled 8,152 ships leaving the port and 7,696 ships docking, supervising 7,415.4 tons of seafood loaded and unloaded through the port. The rate of application of the Electronic Origin Tracking System (eCDT) reached 99%. The province has issued 68 SC Certificates (volume 1,246.35 tons) and 90 CC Certificates (volume of more than 2,585 tons).
