The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just sent a document to the Management Board of Construction Investment Projects of Area 1, the Specialized Inspectorate and related units, requesting to rectify the construction of sidewalks in Saigon, Ben Thanh, Tan Dinh wards and Ong Lanh Bridge (old District 1).
According to the report of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center (Department of Construction), there were many incidents during the construction process: sidewalk digging caused signal cables to break, causing traffic lights at the intersections of Nguyen Van Thu - Mac Dinh Chi (Tan Dinh ward), Nguyen Thi Minh Khai - Ton That Tung (Ben Thanh ward) to lose signal; the W.225 "Children" sign was lost at 160 Co Giang and 260 Co Bac (Cau Ong Lanh ward).
In addition, many traffic signs on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Ly Tu Trong, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Nguyen Dinh Chieu routes were damaged, distorted or fell; unsanitary conditions on Yersin and Tran Hung Dao streets.
Technical tunnels on the sidewalks of Tran Hung Dao and Pasteur streets are not raised and lowered synchronously, causing danger to pedestrians.
Faced with the above situation, the Department of Construction requested the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Area 1 to urgently coordinate with the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center and related units to overcome the situation.
The implementation process must ensure synchronization of the signal system and existing technical infrastructure, limiting the impact on traffic safety, urban aesthetics and tourism activities in the central area.
The Department of Construction also assigned the specialized Inspection Department to strengthen inspection and handling of traffic safety and construction quality violations for implementing units.
It is known that since the beginning of 2025, in the old District 1, there are 37 sidewalks being renovated with a total investment of more than 355 billion VND.
The items include granite paving, rebuilding curbs, replacing gas tunnel covers, paving concrete entrances to the alley... to enhance the urban appearance of the central area.
Previously, the process of renovating sidewalks on 54 streets in old districts and towns such as Districts 1, 5, 6, 11, Tan Binh, Phu Nhuan, Binh Thanh, Go Vap and Cu Chi district affected more than 2,000 trees.
Of which, about 90 trees had to be cut down due to serious damage to the roots and loss of safety, many other trees had their branches trimmed to limit the risk of falling.
