On July 31, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung - Deputy Director in charge of the Le Thuy Land Fund Development and Investment Project Management Board (Quang Tri) said that the unit is erecting barriers and warning signs at locations where manholes have lost their covers along the road connecting National Highway 1 with Cam Hong Sea Square.
According to Mr. Dung, after on-site inspection, a total of 189 alloy manhole covers were stolen. The manholes are about 2m deep, posing a potential risk of accidents for road users, especially at night or in rain.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province Tran Phong assigned the Department of Construction to preside over and coordinate with Cam Hong commune and related units to inspect, assess damage and ensure traffic safety.
At the same time, the provincial police were directed to investigate and strictly handle the act of stealing manhole covers, seriously affecting infrastructure and people's lives.
The Department of Construction has also requested the Project Management Board to continue updating the situation, coordinating with competent authorities in restoring the manhole cover system according to technical standards; at the same time, Cam Hong commune is requested to step up propaganda, calling on people to protect traffic infrastructure assets, promptly report when detecting acts of sabotage.
Currently, measures are still being deployed along the entire route, while the authorities are investigating and searching for the culprit.
Previously, as reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, on the more than 5km route connecting National Highway 1 with the sea square of Cam Hong Commune (Quang Tri), there was a loss of 189 manhole manhole covers, each hole up to 2m deep, causing a serious risk of accidents.
The route has an investment capital of 210 billion VND, and will be put into use from the beginning of 2025. The theft started in March 2025.
The Project Management Board is making statistics on the damage, coordinating with the police to investigate and handle the case. Cam Hong Commune People's Committee also directed local police to verify the incident.
