Soil and rocks drifted along with floods, burying rice fields of people in the highlands of Quang Tri

Quang Tri - Prolonged rain and floods caused soil and rocks to flow down the stream, silting up the rice fields of Van Ri villagers right when the rice was flowering.

On August 24, the People's Committee of Khe Sanh commune said that the continuous heavy rains in the past time have caused soil and rocks from the upstream to spill down, burying some rice fields of ethnic minorities in Van Ri village.

According to initial statistics, 3 households were heavily affected when the rice field area was covered with a thick layer of soil and rock. Local authorities are continuing to review the extent of damage to have a plan to support people to overcome it.

Van Ri village is located in the stream headwaters, so every time heavy rain occurs, the rice field system of the people is often affected by strong currents pulling away soil and rocks. Although the rice field area of the whole village is only about 30ha, this is an important food source, associated with the lives of many households.

Faced with the situation that fields continue to be silted up, local people cannot help but worry, especially when rice is in the flowering stage, preparing for harvest.

Mr. Ho Van Minh, a resident of Van Ri village, said that people's rice fields are located along streams. When it rains heavily, water from upstream flows in very strongly, people have gone out to sea together to clear the flow to limit damage.

However, the rain and flood were too heavy, people could not do it in time, so they had to withdraw to ensure safety. Currently, some rice areas that are flowering have been buried by soil and rocks" - Mr. Minh said.

According to Mr. Minh, the recovery of the silted rice field area is currently facing many difficulties. If done manually, people cannot handle all the soil and rocks, and hiring machinery requires large costs. Meanwhile, the weather is still complicated, with the risk of continued heavy rain, causing many obstacles to production recovery.

Mr. Minh said that in 2025, people in the village contributed funds to rent excavators, expand the flow and clear water ditches to limit the impact of floods. However, due to the large amount of water, these works were still damaged.

People do not know whether rice fields can be restored in the near future. People hope that the local government and functional agencies will pay attention to support to soon stabilize production" - Mr. Minh shared.

Khe Sanh Commune People's Committee determined that the damaged area is currently only about 0.25 hectares, but with the upcoming complicated flood situation, rice along the stream will face soil and rock siltation. The commune is considering solutions to support people to overcome the consequences and ensure long-term agricultural production.
