During the years of resistance against the French colonialists and the American imperialism, the South Vietnam was the place where many touching stories about patriotism, the silent sacrifice of the people. One of the typical symbols of the resilient spirit is the secret tunnel that raises the revolutionary cadres, in which, the tunnel hides My Tho City Party Committee's prominent cadres as a lively evidence of the people's consensus to the revolution.
Located in Group 4 (Hamlet 3A, Dao Thanh Commune, My Tho City, Tien Giang Province), the secret tunnel for hiding My Tho City Party Committee cadres was built right in the grounds of the people's house - which was once a secret base for revolutionary cadres during the most intense period of the resistance war against the US.
The house belongs to the family of Vietnamese Heroic Mother Huynh Thi Le - a loyal revolutionary cause, who did not hesitate to sacrifice to protect the cadres of the My Tho City Party Committee during the years of fierce struggle. This place used to be the destination of many leaders, a point of receiving information, direction and a springboard to carry out many revolutionary activities in the inner city.
The secret tunnel was built very sophisticatedly. On the outside, the house has the normal appearance of a Southern farming family, but underground it contains an entire underground tunnel system designed smartly and discreetly, ensuring absolute safety for those who are hidden.
Materials for building the tunnel are made of clay, tightly timed to prevent landslides. Inside, there is an air intake system that leads out through small bamboo tubes, ensuring air circulation for people inside. Not only a place of shelter, the tunnel is also a warehouse of documents, weapons and means of communication of the revolutionary forces.
Mr. Nguyen Van Toan (80 years old, living in Hamlet 3A, Dao Thanh Commune, My Tho City, Tien Giang Province) - the son of Vietnamese heroic mother Huynh Thi Le - said that this basement was first built in 1967. The tunnel was made of earth. Key officials of the City Party Committee such as Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ha (Muoi Ha) - Secretary of the City Party Committee; Uncle Tam Hung, uncle Sau Tuong, Ms. Hai Huong, Uncle Tu Trieu, Uncle Ba The ... were all here. In addition to the secret tunnel in the crown, on the garden of his family, every garden has one, two other secret tunnels made of buried in the ground. In normal times, the uncles and living in the house; When there is a dynamic, hidden in secret tunnels. Today, the underground tunnel has been restored and preserved carefully.
According to Mr. Toan, at that time, the My Tho City Party Committee was one of the core units in directing the movement of political and armed struggle in the locality. In the context of dense enemy surroundings, secret tunnels such as those of Le's mother were shelters and safe work for officers.
Here, many plans for fighting were outlined, many instructions from superiors were forwarded and young cadres were also trained and practiced before taking the front line. The secret tunnel became a "mental house in the hearts of the people" - a place that added confidence and strength to the resistance forces.
