On May 4, Dong Nai Cultural Nature Reserve (abbreviated as Reserve) reported to the Provincial People's Committee about the discovery of a baby elephant that died after falling into a well. At the same time, the Reserve proposed to the Provincial People's Committee, in order to ensure environmental hygiene, serve scientific research, education and propaganda, and approve the Reserve to keep the baby elephant as a model.
After discovering the incident, the ranger force of the reserve has conducted protection of the scene, made a record to record the incident, report to the leadership of the Nature Reserve to the functional agencies to coordinate to support the handling of the case.
On the same day, May 4, the leaders of the Reserve informed the authorities including: Hamlet 3 Government, Ma Da Commune People's Committee, Ma Da Commune Police, Vinh Cuu District Forest Protection Department, Vinh Cuu District People's Committee, Dong Nai Forest Protection Department, Dong Nai Provincial Police, Department of Agriculture and Environment to verify the cause and examine the scene to clarify the incident according to regulations.
Because the dead baby elephant mentioned above is an animal of an endangered, precious, and rare species that is prioritized for protection, the Reserve requests the Dong Nai Provincial Police to guide the documents and procedures to handle the dead baby elephant mentioned above according to the law.
Currently, the Reserve is continuing to coordinate with authorities to clarify and handle the case according to regulations.
According to the report of Dong Nai Cultural Nature Reserve, at 1:30 a.m. on May 4, the Forest Protection Force of Ba Cai Forest Ranger Station (belonging to the Reserve) received a report from the people about a herd of about 6 elephants appearing in lot 17, zone 5, Sub-zone 160 is a contracted land of the people managed by the Reserve (Hamlet 3, Ma Da commune, Vinh Cuu district). Among them, 1 elephant fell into the well.

However, because the incident occurred at night, the mother elephant and 4 large elephants were still rotating around the well area at the time, so they could not approach the scene to carry out rescue work.
At around 5:45 a.m. the same day, when it was dawn, the mother elephant and 4 large elephants moved into the forest, so the forest rangers and local people were able to approach the scene to rescue the baby elephant that fell into the well.
After reaching the scene to carry out the rescue work, the elephant was in very poor health. At about 5:55 a.m. the same day, the elephant had died.
Initially, the cause of the dead elephant was due to falling into a small, deep well (1.8m wide and 3.5m deep), the baby elephant tried to climb leading to loss of strength, and the individual elephant, 4 large elephants kicked the soil and fell onto the well to make the elephant suffocate.
Because the dead female elephant was under a deep well, its weight, size and gender have not been determined.
