In recent years, Da Nang City has been facing the impacts of complex climate change, especially the appearance of extreme rain from the beginning of 2025 until now.
Talking with Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Cuu Loan - Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Urban Planning and Development Association of Da Nang City - analyzed that Da Nang is a coastal plain city with an average urban development area of 2.5 - 6m.
Accordingly, the drainage direction of Da Nang is currently flowing into the Han River and into the sea, in some areas the drainage is concentrated in the lake before flowing into the river and sea.
Currently, due to the extreme impact of climate change such as rising sea levels, heavy rains... many cities are also flooded.
However, for Da Nang, the city has recently paid great attention to investment. Currently, the number of flooded spots is decreasing significantly, the scope and time of flooding is also shortened, not locally as before.
"As far as I know, Da Nang currently has only 6 flooded spots, these flooded spots are being constructed to completely handle.
The causes of flooding in Da Nang are quite diverse such as unreasonable and unsynchronized drainage; road elevation where the culverts are placed is higher than the residential area; the impact of combined rain and high tides; drainage lines are not reinforced and hardened, leading to silting and encroachment; culverts are too old, damaged and not yet ready for renovation; some areas do not have drainage culverts" - Mr. Nguyen Cuu Loan said.
Experts further analyzed that many sewers in Da Nang City that were built a long time ago have degraded, do not meet drainage requirements, and the density of sewers distributed unevenly in different areas, making it difficult to avoid flooding. In addition, the regulatory role of lakes in the area has not been properly considered and evaluated.
Regarding flood prevention solutions, Mr. Nguyen Cuu Loan said that it is necessary to separate the drainage basin specifically as follows:
For domestic and commercial wastewater drainage, Da Nang should collect it to the urban wastewater treatment plant. Based on the current drainage system, the ground elevation and wastewater of the 12 sub-areas are collected and treated according to the basins.
For industrial wastewater, medical wastewater needs to be collected and treated locally at a standard source according to regulations before discharging into the receiving source.
Da Nang City needs to review and re-evaluate the entire drainage system, and expand small culvert areas according to current development requirements (population, trade, production and business scale in the area).
In particular, Da Nang City needs to have a team of quality human resources, capable of managing, operating, and supervising the drainage system; Combining propaganda to households to raise awareness, not discharging soap when building houses, waste into the sewers...
