On the morning of January 12, sharing with Lao Dong, Ms. Hoang Thi Vuong - Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Sa Pa town confirmed that the temperature at the top of Fansipan on the night of January 11 and early morning of January 12 dropped to -8 degrees Celsius. Along with that, the sharp drop in temperature caused ice and snow to appear here.
“The temperature at the top of Fansipan reaching -8 degrees Celsius is not the lowest temperature ever. There were times when the temperature dropped even lower, to minus ten degrees. Not only Fansipan peak but also the center of Sa Pa town is very cold,” Ms. Hoang Thi Vuong added.
Mr. Duong Quoc Hieu, owner of a coffee shop in Sa Pa town, also said that the temperature in Sa Pa is currently -8 degrees Celsius, so Fansipan peak is much colder. When night falls, the temperature in the area can drop even further.
“During the day, Fansipan peak is -2 degrees Celsius, at night it is minus -8 degrees, making the Sa Pa area appear flat,” Mr. Hieu shared.
According to information from the Lao Cai Province Hydrometeorological Station, due to the influence of the continental cold high pressure combined with the high-altitude wind divergence, the weather in localities in the province is: variable clouds, no rain, sunny days, early mornings with fog in some places, light winds, cold at night, severe cold in highland areas.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the peak of this cold spell is on the day and night of January 12 when the temperature in the highlands will be below 3 degrees Celsius in some places, 6-9 degrees Celsius in the mountains, 12-14 degrees Celsius in the plains and midlands, and below 12 degrees Celsius in some places.
