Suffering from waste, insects are rampant
The project to improve the drainage system in the western area of Hanoi City, including the La Khe water channel and Yen Nghia Pumping Station, started construction at the end of 2015 with a total investment of nearly 7,470 billion VND.
Although the unit cluster has been completed and put into operation since January 2020, the La Khe canal section serving the water supply for the pumping station has not yet been completed due to land clearance problems.
Recently, people living along the banks of La Khe canal (Ha Dong district, Hanoi) have faced serious pollution, not only because of household waste but also because of the dense appearance of insects, affecting the health and lives of people.
According to Lao Dong, the two roads along the La Khe canal are shabby, flooded with household waste and construction waste, causing the area passing through Quang Trung, La Khe and Van Phuc wards to be heavily polluted.
Some sections of the water channel have turned into giant garbage dumps. Garbage not only spilled into the canals but also appeared right under signs prohibiting dumping, placed by local authorities at hot spots for violations, to prevent this situation.
Mr. Hoang Huy Hiep, a resident of Group 2, La Khe Ward, said that since the project began, the area in front of his house has been continuously flooded with garbage. "On days when there are mosquito nets, there are many dense places, no one dares to open their doors for fear of insect attacks" - Mr. Hiep shared.
Notably, people and the press have repeatedly reported the situation of illegal dumping and shabby roads due to slow construction, but the problem has not been completely resolved. Recently, the construction unit and local authorities have dumped soil in some areas that are difficult to move. However, people believe that this is only a temporary measure, because pollution can recur after each rain or when the weather is sunny.
Hot instructions from the Hanoi People's Committee
According to the assessment of the Hanoi Department of Agricultural and Rural Development Management and Maintenance (Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment - project investor), the current progress of road construction along both sides of La Khe canal is still very slow. To date, only about 2.8km of the total 10km of the route has been completed, the rest has not yet been constructed.
Faced with the pollution situation and the frustration of the people, representatives of the Management and Maintenance Board of Agricultural and Rural Works of Hanoi have requested the authorities of La Khe, Quang Trung, Van Phuc wards and the People's Committee of Ha Dong district to soon find solutions to prevent the situation of dumping garbage and construction waste into the land area of the project to Improve the drainage system in the western area of Hanoi City.
Also related to this issue, the Hanoi People's Committee issued Official Letter No. 829/UBND-TTDT to the Department of Agriculture and Environment; Ha Dong District People's Committee on inspection and handling of the reflection that the La Khe canal hardening project (Ha Dong District, Hanoi) has been behind schedule for many years due to problems in site clearance. For a long time, the roads on both sides of the canal were littered with garbage and sand, causing serious pollution, affecting people's health and lives.
Regarding this, Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to preside over and coordinate with the People's Committee of Ha Dong District and related units to urgently inspect, clarify information reflected, strictly handle violations (if any) and report to the City People's Committee.
