From the end of April to the beginning of May, many localities in the South have recorded the beginning of the rainy season. According to information from the Southern and Central Highlands Hydrometeorological Station, measuring stations in An Ninh - Region 3 (Kien Giang) began recording the rainy season from April 27, Tran Van Thoi (Ca Mau) on May 2, Binh Long (Binh Phuoc) from April 26, and Rong Rieng (Kien Giang) on April 22.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the first rains of the season have appeared in many areas such as Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon and Thu Duc City.
Mr. Le Dinh Quyet - Head of Forecasting Department, Southern and Central Highlands Hydrometeorological Station - commented that this year's rainy season will take place earlier than the average of many years, but it will not be uniform between regions. "In the same province, the start of the rainy season can be different for up to a month," said Mr. Quyet.
It is forecasted that from May 15-20, most provinces and cities in the South will officially enter the rainy season. In May alone, total rainfall is expected to be 10-20% higher than the average of many years, with about 15-20 days of rain.
On the morning of May 10, a heavy rain suddenly fell on many areas in Ho Chi Minh City, with measured rainfall exceeding 100 mm, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusts of wind - a common feature of early-season rain. However, according to meteorological experts, such a large amount of rain in the early morning is very rare.
From now until the end of May, weather systems will continue to have many fluctuations. The low-level southwest monsoon has begun to set up and is gradually increasing in intensity, combined with high temperatures and disturbances, increasing the frequency of heavy rains of 50-70 mm, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind.
Total rainfall in the period from May to July 2025 is forecast to be approximately equal to or higher than the average of many years, ranging from 90-112 mm.
Given the complicated weather situation, people need to be very careful when traveling during heavy rain, especially in deeply flooded areas, where there is strong water or no manhole cover. The risk of engine failure due to water overflowing into the flow pipe, or being swept away, is very likely to happen if subjective.
In addition, it is necessary to absolutely not take shelter from rain under trees during thunderstorms, not let children bathe in rain, and proactively raise electrical equipment and appliances in low-lying areas to prevent damage.
In order to respond to the 2025 rainy season, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has directed departments, branches, sectors and local authorities to urgently speed up the progress of flood prevention projects in the area. The goal is to ensure the safety of people's lives and property during the upcoming storm season.
