Typhoon Yagi makes landfall, causing heavy damage to many prominent architectural works in Quang Ninh province.
Among the damaged structures, the Provincial Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Dai Yen Ward, Ha Long City - the host of the 2024 Asian Police Taekwondo Open - was severely damaged with more than 2,000m² of exterior decorative panels peeling off, many glass walls, ceilings, corrugated iron roofs, along with the air conditioning, lighting systems and the roof of the water sports platform broken and completely collapsed.
The Provincial Planning, Fair and Exhibition Palace - a prominent architectural work of Quang Ninh - also suffered heavy damage with 80% of the roof of block A destroyed, rainwater seeping inside and damaging many equipment.
The Provincial Conference Center also had 2,000 square meters of roof, 600 square meters of plaster ceiling, and air conditioning, sound, and lighting systems damaged.
Currently, the Provincial Management Board of Investment and Construction of Civil and Industrial Works is urgently repairing the Provincial Multi-purpose Gymnasium. The repair of the air conditioning system has been completed; the steel structure items, cladding panels, glass doors, aluminum frames and lobby roof are under construction.
For the Planning, Fair and Exhibition Center; Provincial Convention Center, the Board has completed the inspection, damage assessment and is developing a repair plan. Legal procedures will be completed in November 2024.
Inspecting the repair progress of the works on November 2, Mr. Cao Tuong Huy - Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - requested the units to speed up the repair progress, not to interrupt the important activities of the province, especially the Asian Police Taekwondo Tournament. The units need to create a detailed progress chart, coordinate closely with departments and branches, and prepare human resources and materials to complete as soon as possible, ensuring quality and sustainability against the impacts of climate change.
