On October 6, Mr. Cao Tuong Huy, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province, inspected the site and directed the storm recovery work at the provincial multi-purpose gymnasium, where the 2024 Asian Police Taekwondo Open is scheduled to take place in early December.
The 2024 Asian Police Taekwondo Open Championship is a key activity in a series of events celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Vietnam People's Public Security Force (CAND) and the 20th anniversary of the National Day for National Security Protection.
This is an important foreign affairs event of the Public Security Forces, with the participation of more than 2,500 delegates and athletes from 40 countries and territories across Asia. The goal of the tournament is not only to exchange and compete in sports, but also to create opportunities to promote international cooperation in the field of security.
However, Typhoon Yagi caused serious damage to the Provincial Multi-Purpose Gymnasium – the main venue for the tournament. More than 2,000m² of decorative panels were peeled off, many glass walls, ceilings and corrugated iron roofs were severely damaged, causing serious leaks.
The air conditioning and lighting systems, along with the roof system of the water sports area, collapsed completely into the swimming pool area, affecting other important items. The roof of the soccer field and tennis court also collapsed, the lighting system and fire prevention and fighting equipment were severely damaged.
On-site inspection, Mr. Cao Tuong Huy directed relevant agencies and departments to urgently assess the extent of damage, and propose solutions for quick repair. The goal is to complete all repairs to the main items of the Multi-purpose Gymnasium in November, in time to prepare for the upcoming important sporting event. At the same time, the authorities need to closely coordinate with the Ministry of Public Security to ensure security, traffic safety, and fire prevention and fighting.
In addition to overcoming the immediate consequences of the storm, Mr. Cao Tuong Huy requested that units need to research and propose long-term solutions to improve the resilience of infrastructure works to climate change and natural disasters in the future.
