On April 10, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son signed a decision approving the list of strategic multi-purpose hydropower plants. In which, Gia Lai has two large plants, Ia Ly (capacity 720 MW) and Ia Ly expansion (capacity 360 MW) on the Se San river system.
For a long time, these two largest hydropower plants in the Central Highlands have not only simply generated electricity but also performed the function of flood regulation, flood cutting in the rainy season and water supply, drought prevention, serving agricultural production, industry, and daily life for downstream in the dry season.
The operation, management, and regulation of large hydropower plants directly affect the safety and development of key economic regions. The operation process of strategic multi-purpose plants is closely monitored to optimize water use for many purposes.
On the Se San river system, the construction plan for 6 large-scale hydropower projects includes: Ia Ly Hydropower Plant; Se San 3 Hydropower Plant; Pleiku Hydropower Plant; Se San 3A Hydropower Plant; Se San 4 Hydropower Plant; Thuong Kon Tum Hydropower Plant.
In addition, taking advantage of the water source through the regulating dam (regulating water for the lower reaches of the Se San River, the part flowing through Cambodia), the Government has built the Se San 4A Hydropower Plant with a capacity of 64 MW.
