Gia Lai - Prolonged heavy rain caused flooding in many areas, currently 38 schools have allowed more than 26,000 students to stay home from school to avoid floods and ensure safety.

On the afternoon of November 18, a representative of the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province said that prolonged heavy rain caused flooding in many areas in the province. To ensure the safety of students, 38 schools have given more than 26,600 students a day off from school from November 17, until further notice.

The Department of Education and Training requires schools to urgently overcome the damage; clean up and sanitize schools, ensure safety and prevent epidemics; stabilize teaching and learning, continue to implement the 2025-2026 school year program as planned immediately after the flood receded.

On the same day, the leader of Vinh Thanh Commune People's Committee said that heavy rain over the past 2 days has caused local flooding in the drainage culvert of route DT637 (in Dinh To village). The commune government has sent forces to clean up trash and clear sewers to temporarily clear the sewers.

On route DH33 (through Dinh Binh Lake - to Vinh Son Commune), 9 landslides were recorded, of which the K93-K16 area had a large landslide with a volume of rock and soil of more than 3,600m3. The People's Committee of the commune has notified people to temporarily stop traveling through this route, switching to route DT637 to Vinh Son commune.

According to the Gia Lai Provincial Civil Defense Command, heavy rain caused the water level of rivers to rise rapidly, causing flooding in some areas in the eastern part of the province.

In Quy Nhon Dong ward, 767 households with 2,234 people were recorded to be flooded; Quy Nhon spillways 1, 2 and 3 were flooded about 1m. In Quy Nhon Tay ward, quarters 5, 6, Thanh Long and Long Thanh quarters were partially flooded from 0.5-0.8m.

In Tuy Phuoc commune, the rising water level of the Ha Thanh river flooded 26 households in hamlet 1 (Van Hoi 2 village), with a water level of 0.7-1.5m. People have proactively evacuated to a safe place.

In Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, some spillways were flooded such as: DT640 spillway was flooded 0.2-0.3m; Kim Dong rural concrete spillway was flooded 0.4-0.5m, water flowed rapidly; DT640 spillway to Bac Dinh church and Vinh Xuyen hamlet (Kim Xuyen village) was flooded 0.7-0.8m...

"Currently, only the spillways are flooded, there has been no flooding in people's houses. From this afternoon to tonight, the commune will evacuate 255 households with 880 people in areas at risk of deep flooding. The water is showing signs of gradually receding," said Mr. Duong Minh Tan - Chairman of Tuy Phuoc Dong Commune People's Committee.

Local authorities have implemented response plans according to the "4 on-site" motto, proactively evacuating people in vulnerable areas. At deeply flooded areas, authorities are on duty, erecting barriers, placing warning signs and prohibiting people and vehicles from passing to ensure safety.

It is forecasted that from November 18 to the morning of November 20, the eastern area of Gia Lai province will continue to have moderate to heavy rain, some places will have very heavy rain and thunderstorms, with rainfall from 100-250mm, some places over 300mm.
