Gia Nghia focuses on real and sustainable poverty reduction

PHONG NHA |

Dak Nong – Recently, Gia Nghia city has been focusing on implementing poverty reduction work in a practical and sustainable manner, without competing for achievements.

Efforts to reduce poverty rate

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khiem - Head of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Gia Nghia city said that currently in the city there are 87 poor households (358 people), accounting for 0.42%; 167 near-poor households (680 people), accounting for 0.81%.

In recent years, Gia Nghia city has made efforts to implement the target of sustainable poverty reduction according to Resolution (No. 13-NQ/TU) of Dak Nong Provincial Party Committee on poverty reduction for the period 2021-2025 and orientation to 2030.

In particular, the target assigned in 2024 is that Gia Nghia city must reduce 24 poor households, equivalent to a 1% reduction. However, as of November 2024, thanks to the efforts and determination of the political system, Gia Nghia city has reduced 32 poor households, exceeding the target by 7 households.

It is estimated that by the end of 2024, Gia Nghia city will have only 56 poor households (rate of 0.26%), achieving the target assigned by the Provincial People's Committee, City Party Committee, and City People's Council.

“To exceed the set target, the unit has implemented synchronous solutions to deploy to the grassroots, villages and communes. That is poverty reduction combined with vocational training and job creation.

Policy officers must understand the practical needs and aspirations of the people to allocate capital to buy livestock and crop breeds to support production and economic development," said Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khiem.

No way out of poverty

In 2024, the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Gia Nghia city coordinated with the Department of Economics to appraise and advise the City People's Committee to approve 5 projects to support community production development under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, with 79 beneficiaries.

In Dak R’Moan and Dak Nia communes, poor, near-poor and escaping-poverty households are receiving capital support from the State to develop production. The money will be used to buy quality breeds for livestock and fertilizers to care for crops to help increase productivity.

Currently, the communes are implementing projects with a total capital of more than 1.5 billion VND. In addition, the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Gia Nghia City is also appraising, supplementing and completing the documents of 2 production support projects.

Of these, 27 poor people are beneficiaries. These two projects have a total proposed budget of more than 394 million VND.

Ms. Bui Thi Kim Thu - Vice Chairman of Gia Nghia City People's Committee said that from 2021 to now, the city's functional branches have seriously and closely followed the implementation of tasks according to the Resolution of Dak Nong Provincial Party Committee.

The city desires and is determined to reduce poverty and create jobs for the people. However, poverty reduction must be sustainable, not a race for achievement, but must be practical, methodical and effective.

"The city has set a target of gradual reduction, not sharp reduction, because in reality there are many single-parent households, sick, ill, elderly... their circumstances are very difficult to escape poverty. These households all need support from the state's social security policy and the joint help of benefactors," said Ms. Thu.
