Limited supply
For many years, the problem of stable power supply for Con Dao (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) has always been a big challenge.
According to the forecast of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, it is expected that by 2035, this island district will need more than 90MW and by 2045, it will need more than 114MW of electricity. However, Con Dao is currently supplied with electricity from diesel generators with a total capacity of 11,820 kW, mainly meeting the living needs of people and partly serving the business and production of enterprises in the district.

Ms. Thuy Van - owner of a hotel in Con Dao - shared: "During the peak tourist season, the island often has power outages, unstable power supply, greatly affecting daily life and business. We really hope that the national power supply project for Con Dao will be completed soon to facilitate daily life and open up many production and business opportunities".
According to the plan, by 2030, Con Dao will welcome 300,000 visitors, however, this number has exceeded the expected in 2019. The rapid increase in the number of tourists to Con Dao has also put great pressure on the electricity supply here.
According to the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), the electricity industry has to compensate an average of 150 billion VND per year for losses due to the cost of operating diesel generators being twice as high as the electricity price. This burden of compensation will continue until Con Dao is connected to the national grid.
Relieve electricity thirst from the national grid
In order to solve the problem of power shortage, on June 16, 2023, the Prime Minister approved the National Grid Power Supply Project for Con Dao district. Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) is the investor, Power Project Management Board 3 (EVNPMB3) is responsible for managing it.
Mr. Pham Thanh Hoai - Director of EVNPMB3 said - The project started in March 2024, expected to be energized in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the entire project completed in 2026.
"On the mainland of Soc Trang province, contractors have completed the construction of 2 pillar foundations and are implementing the construction of 5 other pillar foundations. For the pillars at sea, the units are also urgently implementing production and depositing. In Con Dao, the underground cable line on the island has completed about 50% of the construction work on the Northwest route and is urgently transporting and gathering materials to construct items on the patrol route. The volume of underground cables has been produced and completed about 20%," Mr. Hoai informed.

Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh - Deputy General Director of EVN pledged to mobilize maximum resources, together with the coordination of ministries, branches, local authorities, people and workers at the construction site, to strive to complete the project on schedule, ensuring quality, safety and efficiency.
According to EVN, when completed, the project will supply power to Con Dao with a total capacity of about 29MW in 2026, 55MW in 2030 and 90MW in 2035.
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province Le Ngoc Khanh affirmed that the completion of the project to supply electricity from the national grid to Con Dao not only ensures a stable and safe power supply but also contributes to ensuring national security and defense and sovereignty over the sea and islands, meeting the expectations of the people and voters of Con Dao.
The project to supply electricity from the national grid to Con Dao district is a group A project, a level II energy project, built in Vinh Chau town (Soc Trang province), Con Dao district (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) and the sea area between these two localities. The total investment is 4,923 billion VND.
The project includes 17.5 km of overhead lines passing through Soc Trang province, 77.7 km of underground cables connecting from the mainland to Con Dao and 8.5 km of underground cables in Con Dao district, along with the expansion of the 220kV Vinh Chau transformer station (Soc Trang) and the construction of the 110/22kV GIS transformer station in Con Dao.
