On the morning of February 28, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh chaired a meeting to inspect the results of the implementation of the task of improving the quality of environmental sanitation in the area of 4 historic inner-city districts.
Implementing Plan No. 366/KH-UBND dated December 13, 2024 on improving the quality of environmental sanitation, collecting and transporting domestic solid waste in 4 historic inner-city districts, currently, the day-trip point in the city has been basically eliminated and the night-time crane point has been significantly reduced; there is basically no longer a traffic jam, causing loss of urban beauty due to the gathering of collector vehicles.
However, the number of open-air vehicles is still large (accounting for 30.2%), causing chaos and losing the urban beauty. Modern and advanced equipment has not been put into cleaning (laundry, road sweeping)... to ensure further improvement of the quality of environmental sanitation in the capital. The implementation of increasing the installation of cameras for monitoring, detection and penalty has not been accelerated.
Regarding this, a representative of the People's Committee of Ba Dinh District said that the district has proactively implemented garbage collection plans early since November 2024. Ba Dinh District identifies the main goal as changing people's awareness of littering.
In addition, the district also installed 300 surveillance cameras; linked 1,000 cameras of local residents to share with the police of 13 wards to ensure security, order, and environmental sanitation.
At the meeting, the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee also inspected the arrangement of public hygiene locations. Regarding the maintenance of public toilets, currently, the city has 351 public toilets, of which 176 toilets are built with bricks, 91 toilets withinox steel shells, and 84 public toilets installed by Vinasing Trading and Communications Joint Stock Company (Vinasing Company).
Public toilets in the area have only met a part of the demand and are currently not guaranteed and are in a state of disrepair; through the inspection process, due to the time of use, some toilets have peeled and leaked structures, affecting the urban landscape.
Regarding this issue, a representative of the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem district said that there are currently 46 public toilets in the district; 4 toilets have stopped operating due to deterioration. The district is renovating and building 7 new public toilets. In 2025, the district will continue to deploy 17 toilets; at the same time, continue to review and adjust the allocation of toilets in more suitable locations.
A representative of Dong Da District People's Committee said that the district has deployed 100% of business households on Nguyen Van Tuyet Street to sign a commitment so that people and tourists when participating in experiencing activities and services on the street can go to any house to solve their personal hygiene needs.
At the meeting, Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh suggested that departments and branches have a mechanism to coordinate and encourage restaurants, hotels, supermarket shopping centers, etc. to open their doors to serve and solve the personal hygiene needs of tourists and people in the area to eliminate the lack of public toilets, littering, dissanitary, and urban aesthetics. Regarding public toilets, the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee requested that a toilet model should be calculated to suit Vietnam's conditions.
"We propose that 4 districts share experiences in good practices so that the environmental sanitation movement becomes the lifestyle and breath of the people of the capital" - Chairman of the City People's Committee said.
