On May 5th, the Lien Son Lak Commune Health Station (Dak Lak province) said that the unit had just received and verified a case of food poisoning suspected to be due to eating datura leaves that occurred in the area.
Accordingly, at about 6:30 pm on May 2, at the family of Mr. Y.T. K (residing in Lien Son Lak commune), two people picked leaves of datura to cook with dried fish to eat. There were 7 people in the family, but only 2 people used this dish.
Toxic plants are grown by the family buying seedlings online, then picking leaves themselves to process food.
At about 7:30 pm on the same day, the two began to show symptoms such as fatigue, headache, dizziness. At 8:50 pm, a patient was taken by family members to Lak Medical Center for emergency treatment.
After being hospitalized, the patient developed additional severe symptoms such as vomiting, blurred speech, hallucinations and strong agitation; the other person only had mild symptoms, so he was not hospitalized.
At about 9:30 PM, the seriously ill patient was transferred to Tay Nguyen Regional General Hospital for further treatment.
