The amount of treated wastewater is only 2%
According to the Project on collecting and treating domestic wastewater in An Duong district, Thuy Nguyen city and 5 districts of Kien Thuy, An Lao, Vinh Bao, Tien Lang, Cat Hai by 2030, with a vision to 2040, the current status of the rate of wastewater collected and treated to meet standards before being discharged into the environment is still very modest. The estimated amount of domestic wastewater, administrative agencies, commercial services, and handicraft production from 7 localities is about more than 147,000 m3/day and night.
Most of the domestic wastewater from households or agencies, service establishments, and businesses is preliminarily treated with self-desealing tanks before being discharged into the environment. In the above localities, there are 6 wastewater treatment plants with small capacity (5 stations are operating, Khe Sau Wastewater Treatment Plant is not operating). The total designed capacity of the wastewater treatment plants is 4,641m3/day and night.
2 out of 5 treatment stations are not operating at enough capacity, the operating capacity of the Tien Lang town wastewater treatment plant (Tien Lang district) is only about 10-12% of the designed capacity, the operating capacity of the Minh Duc wastewater treatment plant (Thuy Nguyen) is only about 7-10% of the designed capacity.

The reason for the problem of wastewater not being able to return to treatment stations or coming in small flows is mainly due to the wastewater collection system not ensuring elevation and not being completely connected from households to the main sewer network. Therefore, the actual amount of wastewater treated by wastewater treatment plants only accounts for about 2% of the wastewater generated.
Investing in the construction and upgrading of wastewater treatment plants
From this reality, the People's Committee of Hai Phong City approved the project to collect and treat domestic wastewater in An Duong district, Thuy Nguyen city and 5 districts of Kien Thuy, An Lao, Vinh Bao, Tien Lang, Cat Hai until 2030, with a vision to 2040 (adjusting the name of the Project to collect and treat domestic wastewater in Hai Phong rural area to 2023 in Decision 634 dated March 13, 2023 of the City People's Committee).
The project's goal is to promptly meet the urgent requirements for wastewater collection and treatment. In particular, by 2023, the city will focus on investing in building wastewater treatment plants to address environmental pollution concerns in areas in the drainage system and water pollution. In particular, priority is given to early investment in stations in the basin affecting freshwater supply for clean water plants and new urban development areas.
After 2030, the city will continue to increase the capacity of stations invested before 2030 according to the plan and invest in the remaining stations. For An Duong district and Kien Thuy district, local wastewater treatment plants will be converted into transit pumping stations to pump into centralized wastewater treatment plants.
Thereby, contributing to improving the environment and minimizing environmental pollution, improving the spiritual and material life of urban people, creating attractive conditions to attract domestic and foreign investors to invest and do business in Hai Phong city.
