According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City), the city currently has 4,280 hectares of crops flooded due to high tides, concentrated in some communes and wards such as Phung Hiep, Nga Bay, Dai Thanh, Phu Huu, Dong Phuoc. Of which, fruit trees have the largest flooded area, with 3,842 hectares, the rest are rice and vegetables. Farmers are actively pumping water out, so they have not recorded any impact on crops.
In the face of complicated weather developments and upcoming high tides, the city's Department of Agriculture and Environment recommends that localities strengthen forecasting and disaster warning information; promptly direct remedial measures to minimize the impact of storms and floods.
The agricultural sector also recommends that farmers producing fruit trees proactively tie up those at risk of falling and harvest ripe fruit. At the same time, visit the garden regularly, be vigilant against flooding caused by prolonged heavy rain; check, detect and promptly use pesticides, increase the plant's resistance to adverse factors.
For gardens that are flooded when the embankment breaks or due to prolonged heavy rain, the Department recommends that farmers let water flow naturally on the garden surface and quickly pump water to reduce the water level in the garden to the lowest level.
During the flood season, people should minimize traveling in the fruit garden. At the same time, prune ineffective branches and over-cutting potholes to limit nutrient consumption, avoid moving the roots that affect the roots when flooded.
After the water recedes, farmers need to cut the additional ditches between the rows of trees to drain water quickly to lower the water level in the garden; use toothpick to gently dredge the ground to break the ice, helping the ground to be cleared so that the roots can easily receive oxygen. Then, use straw or dried grass to cover the ground (there should be a distance from the plant's base of about 20 cm to limit some of the disease fungi from attacking the plant's base)....
