On May 8, according to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board (investor), the groundbreaking ceremony for the Xuyen Tam canal renovation project will take place on the morning of May 10 with the XL-03 construction package (section through Go Vap district).
This package includes a section from Luong Ngoc Quyen Street to Vam Thuat River, about 1.4 km long, with a total investment of about 597 billion VND.

Initially, the XL-03 package was scheduled to start construction in August 2024, then postponed to November 2024 and continued to be postponed to April 19, 2025. However, for many reasons, the plan continued to be delayed until now to finalize the start date.
In addition to the XL-03 package, the project also has two other construction packages in Binh Thanh District including: XL-01 package (renovation of the section from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Bui Dinh Tuy bridge) and XL-02 package (renovation of the section from Bui Dinh Tuy bridge to Luong Ngoc Quyen street, including the branches of Binh Loi, Binh Trieu canals and Son bridge canals).
It is expected that these two packages will start construction on the occasion of National Day, September 2, 2025.

Xuyen Tam Canal has a total length of nearly 9 km, flowing through Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts. Of which, the main canal is 6.7 km long, connecting from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Vam Thuat river; the remaining three branch lines are about 2.2 km long.
The Xuyen Tam canal renovation project is expected to solve the pollution problem that has lasted for many years, seriously affecting the lives of thousands of households on both banks.
After the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council approved the investment policy in October 2023, the project initially had a total capital of more than 9,664 billion VND, of which compensation, support and resettlement costs accounted for nearly VND 6,400 billion.
However, by September 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council had adjusted the total investment to more than 17,200 billion VND - an increase of more than 7,500 billion VND, mainly to serve site clearance.
The total area of recovered land according to the new adjustment is 197,349 m2, affecting 2,215 cases - an increase of more than 330 cases compared to the original plan.
This adjustment comes from the application of new regulations in the 2024 Land Law and the 2023 Housing Law, causing compensation, support and resettlement costs to increase sharply, to more than 14,000 billion VND.

In Go Vap district, the project affects 138 cases, including 137 households and Van Lang University; of which, 40 households were completely cleared, 98 households were partially cleared.
In Binh Thanh District, there are up to 2,077 cases of land acquisition, including 1,230 households and 23 organizations that were completely cleared; the remaining 824 cases were partially cleared.
The project includes items: dredging a canal bed 3.5 m deep, widening the canal surface by 20-30 m, building a synchronous wastewater - rainwater collection system to improve the environment and prevent pollution.
On both sides of the canal, there will be a 6 m wide road with two lanes on each side, a 3-4 m wide sidewalk, a complete park system, trees and lighting.

The Xuyen Tam canal renovation project is expected to not only contribute to improving living conditions for thousands of households, but also create ecological space, green - clean - beautiful urban landscape in the heart of the city. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2028.
