On October 30, Colonel Tran Tien Hien - Commander of the Quang Nam Provincial Border Guard Command said that after many days of postponement due to unfavorable weather, recently, the Environmental SOS Center and Ngoc Hoa Import-Export Company, under the supervision of Cua Dai Border Guard Station, have conducted oil pumping on the An Binh Phat 68 ship.
This is part of the plan to respond to oil spills at sea, after the An Binh Phat 68 ship sank in the waters of Quang Nam on September 18.
However, when the diving team went down to the ship to check the amount of oil and pump it out, they found that there was no oil left in the running tanks and the spare tanks. No oil slick was detected in the area near the wreck.
According to Colonel Tran Tien Hien, the captain of the cargo ship An Binh Phat 68 declared that he had 18,000 liters of D.O. oil, but when the provincial Border Guard came to check, it was not as they declared.
It is possible that the long time the ship was submerged at sea caused this amount of oil to leak and then gradually disappear. The possibility that the ship was stolen while submerged at sea is also ruled out, because locating the sunken ship is very difficult - Colonel Hien commented.
Colonel Hien said that the unit has reported the incident to the authorities, and how to salvage the shipwreck is up to the ship owner and the insurance company.
As Lao Dong reported, the cargo ship An Binh Phat 68, carrying 4,000 tons of crushed stone and 8 crew members, was on its way from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai when it was sunk by waves in the waters of Quang Nam on the afternoon of September 18. The 8 crew members on board were successfully rescued by authorities the same day.
