On the morning of September 16, Mr. Nguyen Duc Dung - Deputy Director of the Road Management Department II - said that the unit had just coordinated to inspect the safety of Ben Thuy 1 Bridge and Linh Cam Bridge.
According to Mr. Dung, checking the safety of bridges is a regular task, every year during the rainy season, especially for bridges crossing rivers with fast-flowing water and sand mining activities, which potentially affect the safety of the bridge.
The inspection includes checking the riverbed erosion, local erosion of abutments and piers; checking the bottom of the pier foundation, the connection of piles to the bottom of the pier, pile damage; checking the current status of the bridge bearing - the intermediate part located between the bridge pier abutment and the span structure, which acts as a load-bearing cushion, reducing the horizontal shear force of the span structure transmitted to the pier abutment; checking the load-bearing structures...
For Ben Thuy 1 bridge, the Vinh City Bypass BOT Branch - the unit responsible for exploitation, management, maintenance and repair - inspected the status of the steel pile anti-corrosion system that had been built, and dived to check the actual corrosion of the steel piles as a basis for assessing the quality and load-bearing capacity of the bridge.
After surveying and measuring against the completion records, the bridge management units will propose a solution if damage to the pier structure, piles, pile-base connections, or unusual erosion is detected compared to the initial calculations.
Ben Thuy 1 Bridge is 630.5m long, 12m wide with 13 spans, and was put into operation in 1990. This is the first road bridge across the Lam River, connecting Nghe An province with Ha Tinh province.
Linh Cam Bridge is 228.8m long and 7m wide, spanning the Ngan Sau River on National Highway 8 connecting Duc Tho district with Huong Son district.
During the flood on September 9, Phong Chau Bridge (Phu Tho Province) suddenly collapsed, causing many vehicles on the bridge to fall into the Thao River and be swept away by the flood.
