On July 21, the Department of Construction of Quang Tri province said that it had sent a document to the Provincial People's Committee requesting to allocate capital for the emergency construction of Cho bridge (Phu Trach commune) because the current project has seriously degraded and no longer ensures safe exploitation.
Previously, after receiving feedback from the press, the Department of Construction coordinated with the People's Committee of Phu Trach commune and Quang Binh Road Repair and General Construction Joint Stock Company II to inspect the current status of the bridge on route DT.558B.
Through inspection, the specialized agency concluded: Cho bridge was severely damaged, the stone and concrete piles were cracked, the bridge girders were peeling, exposing the steel foundation, the piers were eroded, creating a large "frog jaw opening", at risk of collapsing at any time.
From the above reality, the Department of Construction proposed to build a new permanent bridge with reinforced concrete, about 115m long, 7.5m wide, with a 6.5m wide road surface, synchronously connecting with the routes at both ends of the bridge. The total estimated investment is about 50 billion VND from the budget.
Along with that, the relevant agencies recommended that the People's Committee of Phu Trach commune urgently put up signs prohibiting vehicles and regulating traffic appropriately, absolutely not allowing people to continue to cross the old bridge to prevent unfortunate accidents.
As reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, Cho Bridge in Phu Trach Commune, built in 1992, is severely damaged, posing a potential risk to the safety of people passing by every day.
Cho Bridge is 117m long, nearly 5m wide, spanning the upper reaches of the Thai River, and has been a vital traffic route connecting the residential area with the commune center for many years.
According to the People's Committee of Phu Trach commune, the bridge has a structure of 2 reinforced concrete pillars on both banks, while the 10 pillars in the middle are made of stone. After more than 30 years of use, combined with the impact of floods, most of the bridge items have seriously degraded.
Many layers of mortar around the bridge piers were eroded, exposing the foundation. The bridge abutment was swept away by water, creating a large frog jaw opening. The bridge surface has many peeling concrete points, exposing rusty steel reinforcements.
People living near the bridge said that the bridge is located in the upstream, so the rainy season is very strong, causing it to damage faster. Although there are signs prohibiting cars, people and students still have to travel there every day.
