On May 25, a working delegation led by Mr. Chau Van Hoa - Vice Chairman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee - came to survey Mr. Le Van Chia's Hai Chia Bird Garden in Gia Kiet hamlet, Tra Con commune.
According to records, the bird garden has an area of more than 2.6ha, of which the concentrated bird habitat area is about 1.8ha. Currently, there are 33 species of birds belonging to 20 families, 12 genera, with about 2,000 individuals living here. Some conservation-value bird species such as storks and black storks also appear in this area.
Notably, the number of storks and snails in bird gardens has increased sharply this year, estimated at about 1,000 individuals. This is a bird that is considered useful in nature because it is a natural enemy of golden snails.
However, functional agencies said that recently there has been illegal bird hunting, affecting the living and breeding environment of bird species. Forest rangers have strengthened propaganda, planted signs prohibiting hunting and arranged forces to be on duty to handle violations.
At the survey, departments and sectors proposed many solutions to improve the efficiency of biodiversity conservation, protect the ecological environment and exploit the tourism potential of bird gardens in a sustainable direction.
Concluding the working session, Mr. Chau Van Hoa requested relevant units to coordinate in handling environmental pollution in the area around the bird garden, strengthen propaganda to raise people's awareness in wildlife protection, and strictly handle cases of illegal bird hunting.
Leaders of the Provincial People's Committee also requested to develop a long-term conservation plan associated with ecotourism development, infrastructure investment, services and promoting local specialties to create livelihoods for people and promote the local image.
