We went to Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province, to meet Mr. Chau Tan Phong (35 years old), a young man who was blind since childhood but was able to climb coconut trees faster than normal people.
Even though he did not see it, Phong still winded up on high coconut trees to pick fruit to make a living. Mr. Phong's story is a living proof of strong determination and will, overcoming all difficulties in life.
Mr. Phong said that the first days of practicing coconut climbing were very difficult. Because he could not see anything, he had to rely entirely on feelings.
Mr. Phong shared that at first he climbed quite slowly because he was not used to it, but gradually he learned how to coordinate his arms and legs rhythmically. Now he can climb all the trees, whether low or high, even a coconut tree 15 - 20 m high, it does not take much time.
"Each day, we pick coconuts for about 100,000 VND. This amount of money is not only income but also hope and dream for the future of their children. No matter the difficulties, I will try my best, because my two children are the biggest motivation for me to work," Mr. Phong shared.
Mr. Le Thanh Cong, a close neighbor of Mr. Phong, said that every time he saw Mr. Phong climbing coconut, he felt like he was watching a circus performance.
I really admire it. Mr. Phong climbed the coconut tree as fast as a worm, with skillful hands and feet. He was blind and climbed the coconut even faster than me," Mr. Cong added.
Although the coconut picking job is hard and challenging, Mr. Phong is always optimistic and diligent in taking care of his family.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Van, Mr. Phong's wife, said that there were times when Mr. Phong was stung by bees and fell from a height but still did not give up. He always tries to overcome all challenges to make a living and support his family.
"Every time he climbs coconut, I worry because I know the job is very dangerous. But he always reassured me: 'Don't worry, climbing is your job.' Although that statement is simple, I know it is his confidence and determination to overcome all difficulties, working hard to take care of his family", Ms. Van said.
Mr. Chau Tan Phong's story is a testament to the extraordinary determination of a blind person, overcoming fate to make a living. He has proven that with will and perseverance, nothing is impossible.
