After 72 years of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2026), the center of Dien Bien province has had many breakthrough changes, such as: 60m road; dynamic road; upgrading and expanding Dien Bien Airport; Thanh Binh bridge...
Recently, Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee has just approved the task of general urban planning for Dien Bien Phu and Muong Thanh inter-wards until 2050. Accordingly, the scale of planned area is about 84.55 km2.
According to the Dien Bien Phu inter-ward planning, Muong Thanh meets the criteria of a type 2 urban area in the period up to 2030.
This inter-ward is positioned as the political, administrative, economic, and cultural center of Dien Bien province, and also plays a key role in national defense and security of the Northwest region.

With a long history, this inter-ward urban area is also oriented to become a national-level revolutionary cultural and historical tourism urban area, a key commercial, service, resort and transit (logistic) center, creating motivation for socio-economic development for the whole province and the region.
In terms of population size, it is forecast that by 2035 it will reach about 100,000 people and increase to about 150,000 people by 2050.
In the period 2025 - 2035, the development of Dien Bien Phu - Muong Thanh urban area will be broken through based on 4 pillars.
Develop high-quality urban areas in a green, smart, and modern direction associated with the urban economy. Promote tourism development, making this sector a key economic sector with a variety of types.
Accelerate urbanization speed, invest in synchronous construction of technical infrastructure and social infrastructure to soon reach the standard of type 2 urban area. Focus on promoting good traditional cultural values, in parallel with building a civilized lifestyle in the residential community.
Notably in the development orientation of planning space is the optimization of existing natural landscapes.
The water surface area and both banks of the Nam Rom River will be focused on planning to develop high-quality urban areas. The corridor along both banks of the river will be studied for expansion to increase ventilation, prioritizing the green strip system to develop public spaces, commercial services and tourism.
For the Huoi Pha lake area, the plan requires restoring the ecosystem and natural landscape to develop ecotourism, resorts, golf courses... and at the same time studying the formation of a waterway tourism route on the Nam Rom River.
Hilly areas will be prioritized to become urban green areas (forests, theme parks), minimizing impacts that change the natural terrain.
In addition, to ensure a living environment for people, the plan also orients the gradual relocation of industrial production facilities located interspersed in existing residential areas.
The existing urban area will be prioritized for renovation and upgrading of infrastructure, reserving land funds for connecting transportation, parking lots, electricity charging stations and green trees according to the highest urban standards.
