Veteran Ho A Tay is 86 years old this year. He lives with his 6 children in a small stilt house in Ha Let village (Tan Thanh commune, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province). Due to illness and difficult circumstances, his family has not been able to build a solid house.
Knowing this information, the Lao Bao International Border Post coordinated with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tan Thanh Commune to call for and mobilize funds. With the amount of 100 million VND mobilized, border guards and soldiers contributed working days and immediately started building a house for the elderly A Tay.
After only 2 months of construction, the house was completed and handed over to his family for use in October 2024.
Old A Tay said that thanks to the support of the border guards and local authorities, he now has a sturdy, spacious house and no longer has to worry about rain or wind.
Lieutenant Colonel Phan Manh Truong - Political Commissar of Lao Bao International Border Post said that, understanding the hardships of the people in the border area, the unit's officers and soldiers have done meaningful work to support. In addition to building solidarity houses and gratitude houses for families with difficult circumstances; the unit also implemented the models "Helping children go to school", "Adopted children of the border post" by sponsoring 8 children with resources taken from the salaries and allowances of officers and soldiers in the unit.
In Quang Tri province, the Border Guard stations in the Vietnam-Laos border area are home to many ethnic minorities, including Van Kieu and Pa Co. The people still face many difficulties, so the Quang Tri Border Guard has implemented many programs such as "Shelter for the poor in border and island areas", "Comrades' House", "Border Shelter"...
Lieutenant Colonel Ho Phu Vinh - Deputy Political Commissar of Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard said that since 2009, Quang Tri Border Guard has coordinated with other units, actively mobilized funds and thousands of working days of border guards to build more than 124 solidarity houses, "Border shelters", 58 "Comrades' houses" and 43 civil works with a total value of over 13 billion VND.
Recently, in response to the program "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide in 2025", the Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard launched a movement to 16/16 units in the entire army. Thereby, more shelters at the border will be built, helping people in difficult circumstances stabilize their lives.
