At noon on June 28, on Le Hong Phong Street (Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City), 2 large trees were suddenly knocked down by the wind, pulling the entire sidewalk brick off the ground. Fortunately, at the time of the incident, there were no pedestrians or vehicles in this area, so no casualties were recorded.



Immediately after the incident, the authorities quickly arrived at the scene, coordinating to mobilize specialized cranes to clear the scene, ensuring smooth traffic.
The people participating in the cleaning said that only about 10 minutes after the trees fell, many groups of workers were present to clean up the scene, ensuring traffic safety. The fallen tree canopy occupied 3/4 of Le Hong Phong Street and by around 2:30 p.m., the work of collecting fallen trees was completed.

According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, the tree roots were blown up about 3m high, many ornamental plants and potted plants were damaged.
Can Tho City currently has more than 25,000 urban trees along with 41 parks and flower gardens with a total area of about 20 hectares. The work of maintaining, checking and pruning trees is carried out periodically, especially before the rainy season.
However, according to management units, technical infrastructure systems such as drainage culverts, manholes, underground pipes, electric wires, etc. installed on sidewalks can affect the development of the root system, increasing the risk of trees falling when thunderstorms occur.

At 15,15 on the same day, at the Phan Dinh Phung - Nguyen Thai Hoc intersection in Ninh Kieu district, a tree was also knocked down in heavy rain. The time the tree fell and did not hit the pedestrian.
From the beginning of 2025 to now, Can Tho City has recorded 5 heavy thunderstorms, 6 riverbank landslides and 1 high tide. Recent thunderstorms alone have collapsed 2 houses, blown off the roofs of 13 others, causing damage of about 547 million VND. Some central districts are also deeply flooded after prolonged heavy rains.

According to the bulletin issued at 10:10 on June 28 by the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station, in the past 3 hours, through observation of weather radar images and satellite cloud images, convective clouds are developing and causing thunderstorms in the areas of An Giang and Kien Giang provinces.
In the next hour, convective clouds will continue to develop, causing rain in the districts of Vinh Thanh, Co Do, and Thot Not. Then from the next 1 to 2 hours, convective clouds continue to move in the Southwest - Northeast direction, causing further thunderstorms in the areas of districts: O Mon, Thoi Lai, Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy, Cai Rang, Phong Dien... of Can Tho City.
