In 2024, the water level of the Red River running through Lao Cai province will fluctuate, with unusual highs and lows.
Most recently, in early September when storm No. 3 made landfall, the water level of the Red River in Lao Cai city was at alert level 3 at 3.62 m, 0.27 m above the historical flood level in 1971.
The sudden and rapid rise of floodwaters has caused many houses along the banks of the Red River in Lao Cai City to be flooded. Along with that, it has affected constructions, trees along the river and threatened the safety of people, causing local authorities to spend a lot of time and effort to handle.
Being present on the banks of the Red River in Lao Cai city in early November, according to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, the water level on the river has decreased significantly compared to the flood peak in early September.
Through observation along the riverbank from the foot of Coc Leu bridge, Pho Moi bridge to Phu Thinh bridge under construction, many large alluvial beaches and sand dunes are revealed after the water recedes.
Not only that, along the riverbank there is still a large amount of mud and many trees that were broken after storms and floods need to be replaced.
After the flood peak, there was even a time (afternoon of October 13) when the Red River through Lao Cai fell into a state of dry bottom. However, according to records on November 10, the water level has now risen higher, some small sand dunes and river bottoms that were previously exposed have disappeared.
According to Vu Quoc Trung, Deputy Director of Lao Cai City Construction Investment Project Management Board, in early September, the Red River water level rose to a record high, leaving behind a lot of mud and dirt after it receded. But now, the water level has dropped significantly.
“Due to the impact of storm No. 3, many areas of the city were flooded and traffic works were eroded. Currently, the unit is repairing the damage and clearing landslides,” the Deputy Director of the Lao Cai City Construction Investment Project Management Board added.
