The Southern region is warned that there may be many localized heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind.

Currently, the South is entering the peak of the rainy season. According to many years of statistics, this is also the time when extreme weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind accompanied by heavy rains, causing many casualties and property damage.

According to Mr. Le Dinh Quyet - Head of Hydrometeorological Forecasting Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station, thunderstorms and lightning phenomenon often occur a lot at the beginning and end of the rainy season. In the South, the rainy season lasts from about May to November, in which thunderstorms and lightning appear with the highest frequency from May to early June and from October to early November.

However, according to the meteorological agency's assessment, thunderstorms and lightning are still likely to develop complicatedly right in the peak rainy season. Statistics show that the Mekong Delta region is a place with a higher frequency of lightning than other areas, especially in Vinh Long, Can Tho and Ca Mau.

Under the impact of the El Nino phenomenon, this year's rainy season in the South is likely to end earlier, with total rainfall lower than the multi-year average. However, the risk of extreme rains with very high intensity in a narrow area is still high. These rainfalls are often accompanied by thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning, especially in August and September, so people need to pay special attention.

To limit risks, people should regularly update weather forecasts and warnings from meteorological agencies through official information channels. When thunderstorms or warnings appear, it is necessary to quickly find safe shelter.

During thunderstorms, absolutely do not hide under large trees because trees can be struck by lightning or fall, threatening life and property. If you are indoors, you should turn off electrical equipment to limit the risk of lightning spreading and causing damage.

For people working in the fields or in open areas who do not have time to find shelter, do not gather crowds at one location, and avoid standing on high mounds or sheltering under tall trees to reduce the risk of being directly struck by lightning. Equipping basic prevention skills will contribute to minimizing damage during the rainy and thunderstorm season.
