On the afternoon of June 8, at Cua Viet beach (Cua Viet commune), the Management Board of Con Co Island Marine Protected Area coordinated with local authorities, functional forces and people to release a rare blue turtle back to the marine environment.
Previously, on June 7, while fishing in the waters of Con Co island, fisherman Bui Dinh Thuy (residing in hamlet 4, Cua Viet commune) suddenly discovered a sea turtle (commonly known as lizard, green turtle) caught in the net and drifting at sea.
Recognizing that this is a dangerous wild animal and needs to be strictly protected, fisherman Thuy carefully removed the turtle from the net and put it on a boat to transport it ashore. Through preliminary inspection, this sea turtle weighed about 3kg, the length of the turtle's shell reached 32cm and the width 23cm.
After being brought ashore, the sea turtle individual was examined and thoroughly checked for health status by specialized officials of the Con Co Island Marine Conservation Area Management Board. When it was determined that the turtle met the living conditions, functional forces proceeded to release the turtle back to the sea in the Cua Viet beach area.
It is known that the green turtle (scientific name Chelonia mydas) is a rare wild animal under strict protection by Vietnamese law. In the world, this species is also classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) into the list of endangered species for conservation and belongs to the appendices of the CITES Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
