People struggle to make a living during the storm season in Thai Nguyen

Thai Nguyen - Many households in Linh Son ward live in flooding, fields are abandoned, roads are muddy, tired of waiting for drainage solutions to save their livelihoods.

Every time of the rainy and stormy season, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Chinh, Phuc Loc residential group (Linh Son ward, Thai Nguyen) is worried.

Every time it rains heavily, water from outside the fields floods into the house, deeply flooding the garden, disrupting all of her family's daily activities.

Ms. Chinh said that not only the path from the gate to National Highway 17 was surrounded by mud, but her family's three sao of rice fields were also submerged in water, and for the past 6 years they have not been able to plant and are left fallow.

The main source of life is rice and vegetables, which are gradually disappearing. She has tried to improve the soil many times but was helpless because the water had not receded and the soil was muddy, causing her livelihood attached to the fields for many years to be interrupted.

This year alone, her family has suffered from severe flooding 3 times. At the end of June 2025, there was prolonged heavy rain, rising water levels, and it took more than ten days for the water to recede.

"In the rainy season, the whole area is flooded immeasurably, the roads and fields cannot be distinguished. When the water recedes and the mud covers the land, planting and livelihood are affected," Ms. Chinh added.

Not only Ms. Chinh, many households living nearby also often fall into a similar situation. Every time there is prolonged heavy rain, they have to raise their beds and move important items to avoid damage.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Hoa - Head of Phuc Loc residential group (Linh Son ward) said that this area used to be a fertile field, but now it is covered with only a vast area, tens of thousands of square meters of land of more than a dozen households are all abandoned.

According to Mr. Hoa, his family has 5 sao of rice fields that are often flooded, making farming difficult. Due to the lack of Arable land, many people have to work for hire to make a living.

Not only the fields, but also the roads from the area leading to the national highway are affected. More than 100 households in the hamlet had to choose to go around another road (mountainous Elephants) to get outside.

Regarding the incident, Mr. Nghiem Xuan Quyet - Head of the Economic Department of Linh Son Ward said that the flooding situation started from the time of implementing the Cao Ngan Urban Housing Project in 2019.

The stream flowing through the project area has been blocked to adjust according to the plan. However, the new flow direction is stuck in the unused site, causing water to not drain in time and causing flooding.

The government has worked and requested the investor to urgently dig a temporary drainage ditch and open a path for the people.

Mr. Quyet also emphasized that the flooded land is not currently under any project planning, and prolonged desolation will cause waste of land resources.

While waiting for a solution, people here still have to live with flooding and uncertain concerns about livelihoods during the rainy and stormy season.
