In recent years, Thai Nguyen has focused on investing in many dike projects to respond to natural disasters, protect people and agricultural production areas along the river.
In addition to repairing degraded items, the province also reviewed high-risk areas to proactively upgrade the natural disaster prevention system.

The province currently has about 48km of dykes, but many sections through Thai Nguyen City and the suburbs are still closed.
During the historic storm and flood Yagi in September 2024, river water levels rose in some locations, causing a constant risk of flooding in these areas.
The flood peak at Gia Bay hydrological station can sometimes reach 2,881cm, exceeding alert level III by more than 1.8m, causing many residential areas to be deeply flooded.

More than 3,800 homes were affected, nearly 15,000 hectares of rice and crops were destroyed. The total estimated damage is more than 970 billion VND.
To overcome this, Thai Nguyen province has proactively planned to build a dike system on both sides of the Cau River in the period of 2026 - 2030.
This project aims to prevent the risk of dike breaches and flooding in densely populated residential areas and help stabilize production, creating conditions for sustainable agricultural development.

The province has proposed to the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to arrange support resources to be able to implement on schedule.
While waiting for capital, Thai Nguyen is planning to use local resources to reinforce and handle incidents at existing dykes, dams, and canals.
In addition to investment and construction, the province also focuses on managing and protecting dyke works. Many cases of violating the dike corridor and using irrigation works for the wrong purpose have been handled.
This is an important factor to help the project maximize its effectiveness in emergency situations, while raising public awareness in protecting essential infrastructure.

Mr. Duong Van Hao - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thai Nguyen province said that the province has implemented and prepared many measures to minimize damage caused by storms and floods.
According to the leader of this Department, the weather situation in 2025 is forecast to have many complicated developments, so natural disaster prevention work must be stepped up.
One of the most urgent problems at present is the Cau River dike system that has not been closed, making Thai Nguyen City and neighboring areas vulnerable to major floods.

"We have developed a specific plan to complete the dike system, and at the same time proposed supporting resources to ensure the implementation progress from 2026 to 2030," Mr. Hao added.
In the coming time, the authorities will strengthen the strict handling of violations of dyke corridors and irrigation works to ensure safety and long-term efficiency.
This not only contributes to protecting the project but also raises public awareness in natural disaster prevention.
