At around 2:00 p.m. on July 21, a garbage truck arrived at An Hiep landfill but was stopped by people near An Hiep landfill (An Hiep commune, Vinh Long province) and not allowed to enter the landfill area.
Immediately afterwards, local authorities were present to mobilize and propagate, and at the same time committed to the people that on July 22, representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province and related sectors will coordinate to organize a field survey at the landfill, directly meet and dialogue with the people to find solutions.
After being mobilized, the people agreed to disperse, and the garbage truck was forced to return.
Talking over the phone with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper on the evening of July 21, Mr. Bui Tuan An - Chairman of the People's Committee of An Hiep Commune (Vinh Long Province) - said that after receiving information about people blocking garbage trucks to An Hiep landfill, the local government has come to mobilize and propagate to the people.
According to the reflection of households living around the area, the current prolonged rainy season causes leachate from the drainage area to leak out, giving off a foul smell, seriously affecting the daily life and health of the community. Although people have repeatedly petitioned and reported to authorities at all levels, the pollution situation still recurs, especially during the rainy season.
This is the third time in 3 consecutive years (July 2023, July 2024 and now July 2025), local people have organized garbage collection because they are upset about the recurring pollution.
Previously, after the incident in 2024, the People's Committee of Ben Tre province (old) now under Vinh Long organized a direct dialogue with the people, and promised to deploy remedial measures.
In fact, the pollution has temporarily improved, and the landfill has returned to normal operation. However, by this year's rainy season, environmental problems continued to arise, causing resentment among the people to flare up again.
