People support and proactively sort waste at home
From September 1, 2026, Ho Chi Minh City will apply new prices for domestic solid waste collection, transportation and treatment services. The prices are divided into 8 groups of areas, number of people, amount of generated waste and waste sorting at source.
It is noteworthy that in cases where households and individuals perform domestic solid waste classification at source in accordance with regulations, service prices are calculated based on the volume of generated waste instead of the number of people.
Accordingly, the total collection and transportation price at group 1, group 4 and group 6 is 666 VND/kg; group 2, group 5, group 7 and group 8 is 633 VND/kg; group 3 is 600 VND/kg. These prices also do not include value-added tax.
For households and individuals who have not classified waste at source or classified incorrectly, the waste fee is calculated based on the number of people.
Ms. Le Huynh Tam, residing in Tan Son Nhat ward, said that the new service price list is very detailed and transparent. Linking fees with waste sorting efficiency will create a positive habit for people.
Agreeing with this view, Ms. Nguyen Bich Ngoc, residing in Tan Thuan ward, shared that her family has proactively divided waste into three groups including cardboard, bottles and daily household waste. Selling scrap metal both brings small income and reduces the amount of waste to be transported, helping the living space to always be airy and clean.
Assessing the long-term roadmap, Mr. Nguyen Hong Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that the city is developing regulations on management and a plan for waste sorting at source. It is expected that in 2027, Ho Chi Minh City will synchronously implement mandatory regulations on sorting and arrange separate collection vehicles. At that time, households that do a good job of sorting will not have to pay fees for recycled waste, and will also be guided to self-treat food waste into fertilizers to serve family needs.
Grassroots authorities actively bring policies into life
In parallel with the general direction of the city, Tan Son Nhat Ward People's Committee has announced new regulations to households, waste source owners and service units from September 1. The collection price is applied to a frequency of 1 time/day.
According to local guidance, small source owners of domestic solid waste generated with a total volume of less than 300 kg/day (according to Clause 1, Article 58 of Decree No. 08/2022/ND-CP or replacement regulations) include agencies, organizations, production and business establishments, services, investors of production area infrastructure, industrial clusters and landlords who are allowed to choose the form of waste management such as households and individuals. In which, landlords are identified as organizations, individuals, households owning, managing or exploiting houses and construction works with activities of renting rooms for living and activities.
In addition to the collection stage, the Tan Son Nhat ward government identifies the key factor as changing people's habits through propaganda and mobilization to sort waste at source, reduce waste generation, transfer waste on time and in the right places, and absolutely not littering on roads or drainage systems.
