On the evening of August 5, a heavy rain lasting more than an hour caused many areas in Ho Chi Minh City to be deeply flooded. Flooding not only occurs on low-lying roads, but also causes water to flood into people's houses, seriously affecting people's daily lives.
In many residential areas, rainwater along the drainage line could not be reached in time, overflowing into houses, causing furniture to be wet and daily activities to be disrupted. Ms. Tran Ngoc Tuyet (residing on Duong Van Cam Street, the old Thu Duc City) said that the rainwater started to rise from around 6pm, and after 6:30pm, it flooded into her house.
"My family had to use sandbags and plastic sheets to block it but it couldn't be in time. The entire floor, kitchen, and bathroom were submerged in water. Children have no place to play, adults have to wade through the cleaning, Ms. Tuyet said.
In the same situation, Mr. Nguyen Van Minh (Tam Binh ward) shared: "Every time there is heavy rain, my house is like a pond. Furniture must be placed high throughout the rainy season. The most boring thing is the scene where you are cooking or going to the toilet and the water reaches your ankles.
Many long-time residents in these areas said that the problem of recurring flooding almost every year, but have not seen a significant improvement. Some opinions say that the current drainage system has degraded, no longer meeting the rapid urbanization rate, while household waste clogs the sewers, causing water to recede more slowly.
According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, the cause of thunderstorms is the influence of a low pressure trough with an axis passing through the Northern region. In addition, the southwest monsoon is operating at an average level in the Southern region, contributing to increasing moisture and promoting the development of convective cloud masses.
