Typhoon Yagi caused trees to fall, damaging over 117,600 hectares of forest in Quang Ninh. After falling, the trees withered - creating an environment for fire to spread quickly in dry weather conditions.
On October 4, in the area from zone 5 to zone 7, Hong Ha ward, Ha Long city, the fire started at noon and quickly spread due to strong winds and trees broken after the storm.
Authorities mobilized all resources from the Fire Police, Forest Rangers, Border Guards and related units to control the fire. However, the complex terrain made firefighting difficult.
By 11:50 p.m. the same day, the fire was under control, and most of the fire area had been extinguished. Authorities remained at the scene, ready to handle any re-ignition to prevent the fire from spreading.
In Van Don district, there were three consecutive forest fires last week. The largest fire in Thang Loi commune on October 3 burned down about 20 hectares of regenerated eucalyptus forest. Although firefighters were able to control the fire that evening, the fire flared up again due to dry weather and strong monsoon winds.
In addition, other small fires also damaged about 10 hectares of planted forest in Minh Chau commune and 2 hectares in the area bordering Quan Lan commune, Van Don district.
Authorities recommend that people raise awareness of forest fire prevention, especially in cleaning up and handling fallen trees after storms, to avoid fires. Intentional fires will be strictly handled according to the law.
