Thanh Hoa - Due to landslides, many households had to evacuate. Now, after many months, their lives are facing many difficulties.

Mountain suddenly collapsed

According to households in Am Hieu village (Co Lung commune, Ba Thuoc district, Thanh Hoa province), nearly 3 months ago, on August 3, due to prolonged heavy rain, Vang Ta Pong mountain suddenly suffered a very serious landslide, forcing many households to evacuate urgently.

Ms. Ha Thi Thieu (residing in Am Hieu village, Co Lung commune, Ba Thuoc district) said that on the morning of August 3, her family and other households in the neighborhood suddenly heard a loud noise, strong shaking, and rocks and soil rumbling down from the mountain.

“At that time, the noise shook, everyone in the neighborhood panicked and shouted to each other to run away, some carrying their children, some carrying things, just to escape the dangerous place. Currently, I still shudder at the feeling at that time. If we had not run in time, the consequences would have been unimaginable,” Ms. Thieu recalled.

According to Ms. Thieu, after the landslide, when the situation was temporarily safe, everyone in the village dared to return to their old houses to pack up their belongings and property and set up temporary shelters next to Khanh stream to live in. No one dared to stay in their old houses because the risk of another landslide was still very high.

“Up to now, nearly 3 months have passed, living in temporary huts by the stream is always in a state of shortage in all aspects, the space is cramped. However, many households still do not dare to return to their old houses because they are afraid of danger, if unfortunately the rocks and soil collapse again, the consequences will be very unpredictable” - Ms. Thieu said.

Similar to Ms. Thieu's family, after the landslide, Mr. Ha Dinh Lan's family also had to move to the Khanh stream bank and build a temporary tent to live.

“I have lived here for more than 60 years and have never seen such a terrible landslide. At that time, I only had time to hug my children and run away. Now, many months have passed, and my family does not dare to return to their old place of residence but instead stays in a temporary tent. We know it is much more difficult than living in the old house, but we have to accept it to ensure safety,” Mr. Lan shared.

Early resettlement area arrangement

According to Mr. Luong Van Kien - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Co Lung Commune (Ba Thuoc District), after the landslide occurred, the locality organized support for people in the dangerous area to urgently evacuate to a safe place.

“Around the landslide area, a total of 5 households had to be evacuated, and 18 households were in the area at risk of landslides. In the dangerous areas, we have put up warning signs and regularly monitor developments to prevent possible landslides,” Mr. Kien informed.

According to the representative of Co Lung commune, this is currently a short-term solution for displaced households living in temporary tents. In the long term, the local government has developed a plan and allocated land for resettlement. However, up to now, the funding for implementation is still not available, so it has not been implemented.

According to the review of the People's Committee of Ba Thuoc district, due to the impact of landslides, in the two communes of Lung Niem and Co Lung, there are more than 60 households that must be relocated. To stabilize the lives of the people, the locality has proposed to the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province to soon allocate capital to implement the resettlement project.
