Veterans volunteer to block ships to protect people

For many years, the group of veterans has been secretly providing safety for trains passing through Bao Ha commune, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province.

Every day, veterans Vu Xuan Thuong and Nguyen Van Chieu are assigned to guard at the railway intersection with the residential level crossing in Lien Ha 5 village, while two veterans Vu Tien Noi and Tran Van Phien are assigned to guard at Lien Ha 6 village (Bao Ha commune, Bao Yen district).

According to Mr. Tran Xuan Chien, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Bao Ha commune, there is a 12km long National Highway 279 in the area along with a 14km long road along the railway and the Red River connecting to Bao Thang and Van Yen (Yen Bai), so traffic is always crowded.

The commune has Ong Hoang Bay temple - a famous spiritual tourist destination, attracting many tourists from all over. Therefore, the arrangement of guards at the two railway intersections with the residential crossroads is very necessary and is part of the program in coordination with the Traffic Safety Committee and the Veterans Association of Lao Cai province.

Among the 20 self-opened walkways leading to schools, schools and National Highway 279, Provincial Road 161, we identified the 2 locations with the highest risk of insecurity (in Lien Ha 5 village and Lien Ha 6 village) to organize border guarding. Previously, traffic accidents and deaths occurred at these two locations occasionally, Mr. Tran Xuan Chien shared about the proposal to block ships to ensure traffic safety.

In April 2019, the border guard station established by the Veterans Association of Bao Ha commune at these two locations officially came into operation. 4 veterans including Mr. Vu Xuan Thuong, Mr. Nguyen Van Chieu, Mr. Vu Tien Noi and Mr. Tran Van Phien were trained by the railway industry in coordination with the Provincial Veterans Association and the Traffic Safety Committee of Lao Cai province. At each checkpoint where crosses are built, the railway industry is equipped with lights, flags, horns and provides train running plans.

At these 2 locations, there are an average of 11 - 15 trains passing through each day, only at Lien Ha 5 there are up to 20 locations because near Bao Ha Station, there are also carriage lines and many cars.

Having been a "racing" soldier during the years of fighting the US, steadfastly steering the key to bringing goods to the front line in the spirit of "golden spear, pearls", now continuing to promote the "courture of Truong Son soldiers", Mr. Nguyen Minh Chieu, despite being infected with Agent Orange/dioxin, is very enthusiastic and responsible for his work.

Veteran Nguyen Van Chieu confided: At first, organizing the border guard was difficult. Many people passing here when the train was about to arrive, seeing the force on duty signaling to stop the train, but due to impatience waiting, some people did not comply, thinking that the on-duty people were harassing them. Relatives also did not want us to participate, because we were all old, some people still had the legacy of war on them. 4 rainy and sunny seasons, cold, and sometimes rocks are thrown as hard and fast as bullets... very difficult, even dangerous.

"S gradually, local people understand and follow the instructions through the railway intersections with the residential crossroads of the border guards. Since these two police points have been put into operation, there have been no traffic accidents at these two locations, added Mr. Vu Xuan Thuong (ship guard comrade).
