The Tran Hung Dao extended road project (rescue road combined with resettlement and relocation to ensure national defense and security in Xuan Tang ward, Binh Minh ward and the area along the Red River, Lao Cai city) started in 2014, with a route length of 4.1 km and a roadbed width of 45 m.
The route has a total project investment of 483.609 billion VND from the central and local budgets.
The project is invested by the Lao Cai Provincial Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board. The implementation period is from 2014-2021. The construction contractor is a joint venture of Cuong Thinh Thi Company and Dong Tam Company.
At the end of April 2025, according to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, after many years of construction, the more than 4 km road from the center of Lao Cai city to Thong Nhat commune still has some unfinished items such as electricity infrastructure, lighting, median strip...

As for the roadbed, vertical drainage, and cross-drainage, the asphalt paving of the road surface has also been completed. Currently, people can travel on the route more quickly and conveniently.
However, according to local people, the long construction time and lack of lighting at night pose many potential risks to traffic safety for road users.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang (Xuan Tang ward, Lao Cai city) shared: "This extended Tran Hung Dao street has been under construction for more than ten years but has not been completely completed. If the units continue to do it step by step like that, it will probably last a long time. Traveling on this road is very dangerous, especially at night because many places do not have lighting".
According to Mr. Thang, there have been many traffic accidents on this road because the road is still unfinished. Therefore, people hope that contractors will soon complete the remaining items to ensure more traffic participation.
Regularly traveling on this route, Ms. Bui Thi Linh (Nam Cuong ward, Lao Cai city) said that the lighting system from Thong Nhat commune to the city has not been completed, so it is very difficult to travel in the evening because the road is dark. People are also easily stuck to the median strip between the lanes by mistake.
"There are occasional traffic accidents on this route. Therefore, we really hope that the remaining items will be completed and put into use soon, especially lighting to make travel safer, Ms. Linh expressed.

On April 29, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Chu Duc Hai - Director of the Lao Cai Province Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board said: "Our traffic route has been completed. However, due to the need to adjust the planning, recently, at some locations, the unit had to dig up the median strip to repair it."
According to Mr. Chu Duc Hai, the unit is currently constructing the lighting system, the completion time is this month, or at the latest in 1-2 weeks.
Regarding the reflection on the potential risk of traffic accidents in the evening due to low lights, the Director of the Lao Cai Province Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board said that he will direct the lighting to be turned on early.
