Gia Lai farmers build huts in their fields to protect their coffee

THANH TUẤN |

Gia Lai - Coffee prices are high but farmers are still worried about unpredictable theft of agricultural products.

Currently, Gia Lai province has more than 100,000 hectares of coffee. Of which, more than 80,000 hectares of coffee are in business, concentrated in districts such as Dak Doa, Ia Grai, Chu Prong, Chu Pah, Mang Yang, Duc Co, Chu Se...

In the 2023-2024 crop year, coffee prices have continued to increase at record highs compared to many previous years, peaking at over VND134,000/kg. Currently, coffee prices are also fluctuating at over VND100,000/kg.

Farmers are happy because their coffee harvest is good and prices are high. However, they are now spending many sleepless nights keeping watch and alert for coffee theft.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang - resident of Ia Der commune, Ia Grai district said: "Many households have to assign people to look after their multi-hectare coffee gardens day and night. Some people even have to spend money to hire security guards, install cameras, and lights to warn and detect burglars."

Gia Lai Provincial Police advise local residents to be vigilant. For fields, coordinate with households with fields nearby to assign patrols and protection.

In areas with tall trees, people can build ladders to climb up to easily observe the general situation during the day, preventing coffee theft.

When people hire workers from other localities to stay or temporarily reside at their homes or in huts to harvest coffee, they must strictly notify their stay, register for temporary residence, and provide information to the commune-level police and authorities...

Thereby closely monitoring and managing to prevent bad guys from committing property theft.

When people pick coffee and bag it for transport, there must be someone to watch it. Because at this time, thieves do not pick it but steal the coffee that has been packed in bags. Even coffee that has been loaded onto a truck waiting for transport is still at risk of being stolen.

The provincial police recommend that when drying coffee in the yard or vacant land, there must be lighting at night. People need to arrange for someone to watch over the coffee day and night in a convenient location for observation.
