On March 28, Dong Hoa Ward People's Committee (Dak Lak province) said that the locality had sent a report to the Department of Agriculture and Environment about people's fields adjacent to the Chi Thanh - Van Phong expressway project being flooded with grease.
According to reflections from Hoa Xuan Tay 2 General Agricultural Service Cooperative, about 2 hectares of rice fields of people have a situation of grease spreading on the surface. Grease penetrates deep into the soil, causing odors and directly affecting the agricultural ecosystem.
If not handled promptly, the affected area may continue to increase. The cooperative side believes that the reason is that the expressway construction unit discharges grease into the environment, causing pollution.
The incident has changed the soil structure, making crops easily dead. Soil recovery will take a lot of time, costly and affect people's rights. Therefore, the cooperative proposed that functional agencies inspect the scene, confirm the level of pollution and soon come up with solutions to handle and support farmers.
Out of a total of 2 hectares of affected rice fields, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tieu My's family (40 years old, residing in Dong Hoa ward) has about 2,000m2 of land contaminated with oil. She hopes that the matter will be resolved soon so that people can re-produce. This situation has lasted for several months and causes a very unpleasant odor.
Regarding the incident, Project Management Board 7 (Ministry of Construction) - the unit managing the construction of the Chi Thanh - Van Phong expressway project - said that oil and grease were not discharged into people's fields. According to initial assessments, the cause may be due to the historic flood in November 2025 that caused oil and grease cans to drift from the construction site to the surrounding area.
The unit is coordinating with functional agencies to inspect, verify and propose handling directions to overcome the consequences for farmers.
