While on a rescue mission, I saw my family's name on the missing list.
It is the fourth day after the terrible disaster in Lang Nu. On the morning of September 13, 8 people on the list of missing victims reported to the authorities that they were alive, which made many people, especially the rescue team, somewhat relieved.
Mr. Hoang Van Tien (47 years old) said that on the morning of September 10, he woke up at 5am. He went to the stream and saw the flood water rising and rocks rolling abnormally, so he called his family to come out and see. At that moment, the family of Hoang Van Duan (39 years old, Mr. Tien's younger brother) arrived from his father's house.
When the two families returned home in Lang Nu village, they heard a loud explosion from the hill and looked up to see rocks and dirt flying high. All eight people stopped to call out to the villagers and then ran to higher ground to take refuge.
"Only about 3 minutes after the loud explosion, the whole hill collapsed, sweeping away the village. We shouted to the people but it was too late because the incident happened so quickly," said Mr. Tien.
After the landslide buried the village, the families of Mr. Tien and Mr. Duan managed to run up a hill about 500m away from the landslide and escaped. While fleeing the flash flood, Mr. Duan and his wife saw two children being swept away by the flood, so they pulled them up and took them to the emergency room.
After escaping, the two families went to their father's house, about 500m from the landslide area, to take refuge. By the evening of September 10, to ensure safety, the whole family moved to Mrs. Hoang Thi Soi's house, about 1km from the landslide area, and stayed there temporarily to continue searching for the missing people in Lang Nu village.
On the morning of September 13, Mr. Tien's wife, Ms. Hoang Thi Dien (41 years old) and Mr. Duan's wife, Ms. Hoang Thi Diep (33 years old) were participating in rescue work when they discovered that their family was on the missing list, so they reported it to the village chief and the commune authorities.
