The two victims of the horrific flash flood in Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province, include a 31-year-old man and an 11-year-old girl. Both are still in critical condition. On September 12, the Intensive Care Center, Bach Mai Hospital received the two victims.
Patient H.V.V, male, 31 years old, Tay ethnic group, is in critical condition. Patient V is a victim of flash flood in Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh. At 6:00 a.m. on September 10, the whole village was flooded. At about 7:00 a.m., the victim was discovered and given first aid before being taken to Bao Yen District Hospital for emergency treatment. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a conscious state, with difficulty breathing, rapid, shallow breathing, severe respiratory muscle contractions, pale skin and mucous membranes, skin abrasions all over the body, pain on pressing on the left ribs 6, 7, 8, and reduced breath sounds on the left. The patient was given basic treatment and transferred to Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital with a diagnosis of closed chest trauma, coma, pale skin and mucous membranes, multiple abrasions on the head, face, chest, abdomen, etc.
The patient's condition became more serious, with a high risk of death, so he was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital in a sedated state, on a ventilator, and maintained on high doses of vasopressors.
As soon as he was admitted to the hospital, doctors quickly performed many techniques to rescue the patient, such as mechanical ventilation according to the lung protection strategy, continuous blood filtration to remove cytokines. The patient is currently being sedated, muscle relaxants, ECMO to support breathing and circulation, continuous blood filtration combined with adsorption blood filtration, optimal broad-spectrum antibiotics, bronchial lavage endoscopy, blood product transfusion... The current condition is still very severe multiple organ failure, with a high risk of death.
The second case is Mong Hoang Thao Ng, female, 11 years old, Tay ethnic group. The child patient is also a victim of the landslide caused by flash floods in Lang Nu village. The patient is currently receiving intensive treatment at the Pediatric Center, on a ventilator in serious condition.
The flash flood that occurred on the morning of September 10 in Lang Nu village buried everything. The entire village, which used to have 37 stilt houses next to the fields, now has only a pile of mud left.
On September 10, Bao Yen General Hospital received 18 patients from the devastating flash flood that occurred in Lang Nu village. Of these, 2 patients are in critical condition, requiring ventilators, while many others have broken bones, internal injuries, and severe skin damage. Worryingly, most of the patients are in a state of psychological trauma due to the natural disaster.
In addition to physical treatment, doctors are also working to reassure the affected people psychologically, to prevent the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a common consequence after experiencing severe natural disasters.
