On February 28, Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) had a working session with Quang Binh province on the plan to implement the Dong Hoi Airport upgrade project, including the construction of the T2 Passenger Terminal and the expansion of the aircraft parking lot.
Quang Binh Provincial Party Secretary Le Ngoc Quang emphasized that Quang Binh has great potential for tourism, services and logistics, while maintaining a strategic position on the North - South route as well as the East - West economic corridor. However, transport infrastructure, especially Dong Hoi airport, is a major barrier to development.
Currently, Dong Hoi airport has a designed capacity of 500,000 passengers/year, but has exceeded the level by more than 50%, expected to reach nearly 1 million passengers/year by 2025. Faced with strong increases in demand, airport expansion and construction of the T2 passenger terminal have become an urgent task, not only promoting socio-economic growth but also improving the province's competitiveness.
At the meeting, Quang Binh province and ACV agreed on solutions to speed up the project progress, ensure the handover of the site according to plan and implement the project synchronously and effectively.
The Secretary of the Quang Binh Provincial Party Committee affirmed that he will coordinate and fulfill his commitment to carry out the procedures to start the construction of Terminal T2, and inaugurate the parking lot. This is not only a project to serve tourism and socio-economic development but also an important architectural highlight of Dong Hoi city.
The T2 Passenger Terminal construction project and auxiliary items will increase the airport's operating capacity to 3 million passengers/year, serving mainly domestic flights. According to the plan, by 2030, Dong Hoi airport will reach a capacity of 3 million passengers/year and aim for 5 million passengers/year by 2050.
Mr. Vu The Phiet - Chairman of ACV Board of Directors said that before April 30, 2025, the project to expand the aircraft parking lot - Dong Hoi Airport will be completed and then the T2 Passenger Terminal project will continue to be started.
ACV leaders pledged to implement the construction as soon as possible, with an expected time of 12-14 months to complete the T2 passenger terminal. According to Mr. Phiet, although the planned capacity is 3 million visitors/year, in reality, it is possible to exploit 4-5 million visitors and there is still room for further expansion.
