According to Mr. Hoang Van Dung - Director of Van Don Airport - due to super typhoon Yagi, the airport was closed and had to adjust the opening time twice, until 8:00 p.m. on September 7.
Despite implementing a series of measures to respond to storms, floods, and natural disasters, Van Don airport still suffered damage to its infrastructure due to the destructive power of super typhoon Yagi.
Specifically, some glass roofs of the passenger terminal were peeled off, and the outer glass in some areas was blown away by the wind. 80% of the trees in public areas were broken. Some signs indicating the departure and arrival terminals were peeled off, and the ceiling system in some areas was blown away by the wind. The metal roof of the internal parking lot was completely peeled off. The Viettel broadcasting station in the area was paralyzed. Fortunately, Van Don International Airport did not record any accidents related to people, vehicles, or equipment ensuring flight operations.
Immediately after the wind reduced its intensity, the unit quickly began troubleshooting work overnight, including: checking affected facilities and mobilizing all forces to repair and reinforce to ensure the safest flight conditions to welcome passengers back.
All work to overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi was completed on the night of September 7 to be ready to welcome the first flights back after the storm on September 8.
Currently, in Quang Ninh province, Van Don airport is one of the few service and tourism units that have resumed operations after storm Yagi.
Typhoon Yagi has caused very heavy damage to Quang Ninh, including the service and tourism sectors.
Currently, electricity and telecommunications systems have only been partially restored. Ships, hotels, and ports have been severely damaged and are unlikely to be repaired in a short time.
